CineForm

I know Aspect HD is optimized for Premiere, but only Connect HD is in the budget. Are there any known issues with Connect HD and Premiere? Or could it be that because my trial has since expired, it doesn't want to correctly render new files?

You certainly can't render to CineForm if you haven't purchased a license. We do not test Connect HD with Premiere Pro we consider Aspect HD the base level product for Premiere Pro. I don't know how well Connect HD functions with Premiere, probably pretty much like any other third party codec (there is no acceleration without Aspect HD, so what you are seeing is Premiere's default behaviors.)

Could you tell us more about such ways?

I planning on a new blog entry covering the subject. If I post that info here it would only get lost, the 601 posts.

David.

You meant to say I can't render if I haven't purchased a license, correct?
And it runs great with Premiere.

False contouring in smooth gradients with Aspect HD?

False contouring in smooth gradients with Aspect HD?

I just bought and installed Aspect HD. First thing I do is import some HDV footage with the CineForm HDV Capture setting. When playing the material, I notice that the colors in some places of the image (particularly smooth gradients like a white wall lighted by an open window) seem different than I remember from watching the material in AVID (DV).
To test this further, I imported the same HDV material using Adobe HDV Capture (included in Premiere). Comparing the two I must say that yes, there is a difference.
I'll try to describe it (I'll also be happy to provide stills). A flat surface, like a white wall, seems more evenly white/grey when NOT using CineForm HDV Capture. When using the latter, the "false contouring" seems to increase and shades of light purple make their way into the wall. When a person crosses before the wall this phenomenon is even more apparent on the surface of the wall not covered by the person.
I understand that Aspect HD does not alter the image quality (in a bad way) so I don't understand why this apparent degradation takes place.

The phenomenon is still there after exporting movies and watching in Media Player.

More likely a display issue than a codec issue, as the 709/601 conversion that occur for PC playback can add sutble contouring (preview display only.) However, please file a trouble ticket with www.cineform.com/support and attached those stills. Once we see the data we can determine whether contouring is a display issue or an 8-bit issue, as some gradients are best presented in 10-bit (even from an 8-bit source.)

does cineform ConnectHD have a file size limit to convert? I have a 3gb MXF file that whenever I try to convert, it either stops short because of an error, or converts fully but without audio. The clip doesn't need to be repaired, and the audio files aren't missing. I've submitted a ticket, but 2 days later without it being addressed, i was thinking it might be worth posting here.

The ticket will get addressed but after the weekend. I have heard of the before, but as it isn't on the to fix list, I hoping support will have a work around for you.

Is there a place to go to discuss overlay issues with Aspect? I am having problems with latest version and Premiere Pro not outputting to overlay when scrubbing. It will play the previews fine but not scrubbing. Actually it scrubs when you first oprn Premiere but once you hit enter to watch a preview the scrubbing feature just fails. You get just a black screen and no video to overlay. I have completely uninstalled aspect HD a couple of times to no avail.

I am using latest ATI drivers with a x1950 card. It seems like the cineform preview engine is snaggin the overlay and not allowing premiere default scrubbing engine acces to the overlay....or something like that.

Anyone? I opened a trouble ticket but that might take a while to resolve.

Thanks!

is it possible to convert only audio MXF files with cineform? the support people have yet to find a solution to my problem converting my file. I can get the video itself totally rendered, but it does not have audio, though it is filed correctly in the folders with all of the others that converted without a problem.

Make sure you setting the playback settings has overlay active (not just desktop mode), this changed a couple of versions ago. Otherwise file a trouble ticket at www.cineform.com/support as this is the first I heard of this one.

David,
Thanks. I have made sure that option is checked. Also, a peculiar side effect is also that when I start Premiere Pro using a Cineform preset, the output to my TV goes black, even before I go into the playback options and turn on the overlay. In hte past the monitor would not go black until I enable overlay in the CIneform settings.

I think I stated that if I drop a clip onto the timeline immediately after starting premiere, I can sometimes scrub it for a few seconds but as soon as I actually hit the spacebar to have Premiere play the timeline, I can see the monitor flicker as it changes modes to playback(always did this on other systems too) but when I press spacebar again the monitor goes black and no ammount of scrubbing will get anything back. Even closing and reloading the same project doesn't help. Only starting a fresh new project allows overlay to work temporarily.

Thanks.....I filed a ticket and I am waiting to hear back. This behavior is consistent in both Premiere Pro 2 and 1.5 so I doubt it is a Premiere specific issue.

Unfortunately HDLink is not currently setup for converting audio alone. If there aren't many clips you can manually convert the MXF into mono wave files. Tell me how technical you want to get, but you can do the conversion with GraphEdit (http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/showsoftware_graphedit_141.html)

Ok then, this isn't too bad.

1) Download, install and run GraphEdit.
2) From the File menu, select "Render Media File ..."
3) Type the "Files of type:" to "*.*"
4) FInd the Audio MXF file you want to convert, select and click "Open".
5) You can now play this file to test where it has the audio you need.
6) If it is the correct file, delete the "Default DirectSound Deice" by selecting and pressed the delete key.
7) In the Graph menu, select Insert Filters.
8) This find, select and press "Insert Filter" on "DirectShow Filters -> WAV Dest"
9 ) Do the same for "DirectShow Filters -> File writer" which will prompt you for the file of the new wav file, use "myaudio.wav"
10) Then "draw" line between the "pins" to creat this "graph"

MyAudioGraph.png

11) Press "play" to generate the WAV file.
