CineForm

That's pretty cool.

As far as less strain on the computer and hard drives would it be better to do a cuts only edit in the native DVC PRO codec, then upscale after for the rendering work?

You could try that, but I don't think that workflow is all that great. I really against the offline then conform online, that should die as quick as we can help it. :) The CineForm AVI will only be 20-30% bigger as 10-bit AVIs, yet they will playback faster than the DVCPRO-HD files allow you to work online, all the time. That is my recommendation.

David,
Can you work with the converted HD (720/1080) AVI files in a SD sequence in Premiere? I'd love to be able to have complete pan and zoom flexibility in post.
Does Premiere treat HD footage in a SD sequence as it treats high resolution still pictures? (For example, when you put a 2500x3000 picture on a 720x480 timeline, you'll only see the 720x480 area in the center of the picture. To see the whole picture you have to scale it down. Does HD footage work the same way?)
Thanks!

Yes it does work that way, so yes you can zoom around inside an HD frame on an SD timeline. The only issue is real-time preview in Aspect HD doesn't like larger content inside a smaller timeline (note: the other way around is fine), so for your HD fly-throughs you will need to render.

Availability of Prospect HD Edit

Availability of Prospect HD Edit

So David, is Prospect HD Edit ready to use for PP2.0?

AC

Yes, Prospect HD Edit is really for Premiere Pro 2.0 only (although it is currently backward compatible with 1.5.1 that will not continue much forward.) Note: Aspect HD will remain compatible with both 1.5.1 and 2.0 for quite sometime.

Firewire ingest?

Firewire ingest?

David -

Sorry to keep drilling you with questions about this, but is it my understanding that PHD Edit will work w/PP2.0 for DVCPro-HD footage ingested via firewire?

The reason I ask this is that after perusing your website, I only see support for HDV ingested over firewire and nothing stated about DVCPro-HD material.

Would you clarify this pretty please?

AC

The Prospect HD web pages haven't been updated yet to indicate HVX200/DVCPRO-HD support, however direct Firewire ingest in not supported. Prospect HD will either convert disk or flash media DVCPRO-HD media, or ingest via HD-SDI (with Prospec tHD Ingest), there is no need for Firewire ingest. For HXV users, the camera can be mounted via USB2. So you do not need the FireWire option for the DVCPRO-HD deck (if you are working with Varicam) as the ingest option with Prospect HD is far cheaper.

Got it.

So the workflow scenario would be something like:

- Shoot footage with HVX to a P2 card, Cineporter or Firestore.
- Transfer footage to dedicated HDD (external via firewire or SATA adapter for laptops).
- Start up PP2.0 / PHDe.
- Import clips / footage (from dedicated HDD).
- Start editing.

Does PHDe allow me to edit with low res proxies to avoid image degradation while editing?

Also, you mentioned hooking up the HVX to a USB2.0 port. For what reason?

AC

Andrew, if you have P2 media and you don't have a P2 drive on your PC, the USB connection allows you to mount the camera as a P2 drive. The transfer would be direct from the P2 media in camera and converted to a CineForm AVI (you didn't mention this important step.)

Regarding "Does PHDe allow me to edit with low res proxies to avoid image degradation while editing?"

CineForm product are on-line NLE solution, there is no off-line proxy required. We do have dynamic proxies is the fact that we use wavelet compression, which allows for lower resolution decodes to be very fast, however your full res data is always available. This is one of the major values in CineForm tech.

Well thanks David! I am now an owner of the AspectHD program and i must say that I am impressed with the speed so far of converting clips and playing with some in a timeline. I have yet to do a bigger project, but feel pretty confident that it should be speedy. Thanks again for all your help on here and on the Premiere Boards. Next purchase is a matrox Parhelia APVe card so I can view everything properly.

I haven't looked into it, but is it possible to just add a PCMCIA card to your desktop computer?

Hello at all,
is Aspect HD going to support DVCProHD footage either from AJ-HD1200A or as footage from other applications?
Thanks,
axn

axn,

Aspect HD is not likely to support firewire based DVCPRO-HD decks simply because the decks are so expensive so the small incremental sales on Aspect HD is not worth the development expense. P2 solution as so much easier to support in an low cost solution like Aspect HD. AJ-HD1200A support is more likely with Prospect HD, but as that has HD-SDI I/O the FireWire support is not needed -- we already support that deck via HD-SDI (which is more efficent for converting to CineForm -- as now we are using the desk's hardware decoder.) As for supporting DVCPRO-HD media from other applications, would are looking in to that -- no promises yet.

I tried the demo for Aspect HD for the 15 day trial period. It has expired. Now my P2 viewer doesn't work anymore. Any chance this is related? The only other thing I did during this time period is install a trial of Vegas 6.0d. Since Cineform hooks into or requires P2 viewer to work I figured there was a better chance that it did something rather than Vegas. Any help?

The viewer opens and initializes but when I choose a clip it doesn't appear in the monitor window and when I hit play nothing happens.

Thanks!

Aspect HD doesn't hook into the P2 Viewer, it only uses DirectShow add asks for a DVCPRo-HD compliant decoder (which the P2 Viewer installs.) We don't even check that it is installed. So this is puzzling. However, we have seen the behavor when the P2 Viewer will not play, we trying to determine its cause.

David,
Thanks. If you ever figure out waht is causing it let me know. I just cannot get it to work. Uninstalling and reinstalling the P2 viewer software and drivers doesn't help either. I don;t want to rebuild my laptop just to fix this but the ooptions are getting smaller.

On another note....is there an option in the cineform capture tools to split large m2t files? I am also editing with an H1 and my copy of Aspect HD will be here later today. I had captured a few .m2t files to hard disk but they are one large file. I'd prefer to see them split based on the start and stop of the camera record button.

Is this possible? I just don;t need these large files to deal with!

Thanks!

another question......when you saw issues with the P2 viewer not playing....was it intermittent or was it permanent? Cause I cannot get mine to play at all.

Thanks!
