CineForm

Yes it was useful, I gave some suggestions on re-running you WMV exports to get the quality you expect. There are some differences between the beta version you are running the release Aspect HD 4.1.

David:

I followed your suggestions and the resulting clip looked fantastic.

Turns out to be a procedural error on my part.

As a beta tester, I also need to apologise for not reporting findings to you first, instead of posting them in a public so quickly.

By the way, the cineform footage exported to After Effects came back to Premiere without problems... looking exactly like the original. Cineform is a must-have for anyone who does compositing.:love4:

Is there still no Firestore beta testers for cineform? And when is the new Aspect hd planned to be released?

We have one Firestore beta tester who hasn't reported any issues. Aspect HD 4.1 has been released although we still consider the HVX support beta, but you can now download the trial and purchase the software if you like it.

David, I posted this earlier but I think you might of missed it.

What would be your recommendations for capturing 1080 25p (I live in pal land) out of the HVX for a film out?

Would you capture to the camera's HD codec - dump to the computer - then convert via the CineForm 10bit codec for post? Or would you recommend capturing to a computer/aja combination bypassing the DVC HD codec altogether?
Would it make that much difference either way as the initial capture?

Thanks.

If you are capturing via P2 media there is no avoiding the DVCPRO-HD compression. In that case I would import the P2 media in Prospect HD (i.e. for a film project) and upscale the 1440x1080p25 to 1920x1080p24 in 10-bit (with audio resampling for 24p.)

If you project allows for some direct ingest to a Prospect HD PC or a Wafian HR-1 (particularly for effects shoots) then it is worth doing. Jacob Rosenberg (http://www.formikafilms.com/ and Dust to Glory fame) did this very test to find more detail in the component output from the HXV and apparently more dynamic range than the compressed signal. I have not confirmed this, but Jacob is pretty thorough.

I make a habit of not assuming anything so, did you leave out the question mark and you're asking me, or is it a typo and you 're saying it is worth doing?

This particular project will have a lot of greenscreen shot in a studio so being tethered to a computer shouldn't be a problem, but for all the ext - location steadicam stuff it is probably impossible.

One of the problems living down under is hearing about all this great stuff that is available via the net but then not really being able to access it to do tests. You end up having to rely on the opinions of others, hence the questions.
By the way I have downloaded and read all the stuff you have available off your site, but for the hungry it's never enough.

Thanks.

John,

Yes all the CineForm products support DVCPro50, however that modes doesn't (yet) support the scaling to HD -- so it you stick with NTSC or PAL for DVCPRO50 you will be fine.

It sounds like Aspect HD is a great program, but just curious if everyone is buying this software, or doing without, and why?

Thanks David! Yeah That is truly a feature I was looking for. What is everyone using to view their footage out of Premiere? Can you firewire out into a deck/cam then into a monitor for DVCpro50 or HD? Or is everyone using a card?

Thanks,
John G.

That type of FireWire to camera monitoring is not supported. For an external HD (or SD) display of your timeline, I recommend a Matrox Parhelia graphics card (nice), or for Prospect HD users an AJA Xena LH card (nicest solution.)

What about a AJA LS card or a Blackmagic HD Extreme Card with Aspect HD? Will that work for viewing out footage? The Reason I ask is because Matrox only makes the Parhelia with a PCI-X 16x and AGP and my Graphics card in my computer take up my 16X slot and I have no AGP slots. ;-( Would have been a good option for me.

Sorry for all the questions, Just tring to get things straight and find a cheaper route.

John G.

John,

Any dual head video card (with video output) should work. Aspect HD uses the overlay for video playback. Neither the LS or BlackMagic cards can be used.

Hi David. I have a few questions:

1) Is Aspect HD going to support 50p some time soon.

2) The capture is done with Premiere so the two programs work together in
some way (is it a plug in) ? or we can just transcode an MXF file using Aspect
HD and work with the .avi file in any NLE we like.

3) I have worked with Edius Broadcast demo and MXF 720p24p. I will go with Edius if it supports PAL in V4 but I still cosider Premiere for the interaction with Adobes other programs. Is Aspect HD a solution for me ? And what about the possibility editing with Edius and then use Aspect HD for After effects ?

I just have to think all the posibilitys, I'll apreciate your comments.

best
Andreas

It has that now. Aspect HD can support any frame rate up to 60p (yes including 25p,50p and 50i.) We only have a limited number of presets, so if the frame rate and resolution you want is missing it is very easy to create your own preset.

2 & 3) The capture is done with Premiere so the two programs work together in

Sounds like you want Connect HD 3.0, which doesn't include the Premiere accelerator (so it is cheaper but not as fast in Premiere.) It is a standalone capture/conversion tool for all the new HD media (HDV/P2) and converts them to AVIs for use in any NLE or compositor (that supports AVI.) See http://www.cineform.com/products/ConnectHD.htm

Thanks David, I think you are probable right. Its true that for me a convertion will do, but when you say that connect HD it is not as fast in Premiere you mean as a plug in ? If I use Connect for the conversion do I get real time editing with the .avi file ? And yes, I thing I havent uderstand 100% what Aspect HD does besides delivering an .avi even if I read the specs again and again... what am I missing ?
(I need the speed, at least the speed I get from Edius working with native DVCPRO-HD footage, maybe I need Aspect HD afterall ? )

Thanks again
Andreas
