I'm dense. How do I start this process once I've downloaded the NeoPlayer and NeoScene trial?

I still have NeoHDV and not sure if it works the same, but you launch the app, point it to the folder or card and process - should be a settings/prefs somewhere to set codec level, pulldown etc.

I got it working finally. Cineform Codec looks like it compares very nicely with the ProRes.

And the Pulldown is working accurately.

kholi, would you know how this process would be done on PC? Would it be the same method as say, the HV20?

Sounds like NeoScene HD is going to be a good add-on for GH1 post work. How much faster is it than using Apple's transcode to ProRes, and can you give a comparative file size between the two?

What happens when you use the Apple ProRes? Just slow? Won't do 24P? Is it just the GH1?

Cineform will vary between about 76 and 160Mb/s depending on the quality setting and frame rate. I believe ProResHQ goes as high as 220Mb/s.

However, there is always a however, ProRes uses discrete cosine transforms like MPEG; Cineform uses wavelets.

I think ProRes is Apple's answer to "uncompressed". I think Final Cut has been moving slowly for the past couple of years because Apple is working on a major overhaul to make it a very modern, cutting edge NLE. Either that or Apple has lost interest and is abandoning the product. I doubt the latter, and have no inside info, but as an Apple watcher for many years, when their products are not introducing innovative features regularly its generally one of those two situations.

Personally, I think Final Cut is going to come in September, be based on the work in Snow Leopard and blow us all away. That's my prediction.

Come on guys; 1 TB external drives at Costco for a little over a bill.

CineForm or ProRes, you need to deal with large file sizes in order to have a decent post experience with these heavily compressed AVCHD formats.

I go straight to ProRes with 5D2 files and am very happy to work in a high quality, fast rendering, frame-discrete codec workflow.

I second what Elton says. Large hard drives are a necessary part of the game. I'm in prores on everything I edit.

So am I, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. :)

A couple years ago I was using the Sheervideo codec which gave great results. Might have to try it again.

So what was the benefit of cineform vs ProRes?

does cineform transcode and remove the pulldown all in one step?

Does anyone know a way to get NeoScene to output regular ProRes files rather than HQ? The HQ bitrate doesn't really strike me as necessary for footage from this cam. I could always transcode again and probably not lose much quality (prores hq to prores) but that's an extra workflow step.

Also, outputting Cineform files doesn't work at all on my machine, is that a limitation of the demo? It just sits idle on processing the first frame. 2008 8-core MacPro, 14gb ram, Nvidia 8800 graphics. Shouldn't have any problems ;)

What were the Cineform settings that worked? I am getting errors in NeoHD on windows with the MTS files Sam posted.

I had no problem with NeoScene in Windows - set it to remove pulldown, quality high and let it rip.
