I can't figure out if ConnectHD will support 1080i/30p . I checked their websites and they mention 1440x1080 30p. Vegas itself supports 1920x1080 frames. I have footage shot at 1080i/30p can I run it through ConnectHD and output it from Vegas into a 1920x1080 WMV file?
Connect HD can resize DVCPRO_HD's 960x720 (60p) and 1280x1080 (30i/30p) up to 1440x1080p. Only CineForm's Prospect HD supported resizing up to 1920x1080p. In either case most NLE support to 1.333:1 pixel ratio to display 1440x1080 as 1920x1080 within the timeline. 1440x1080 is a common resolution, as it use by HDCAM, XDCAM-HD and HDV, so up-ressing DVCPRO_HD to this res seems like a good option. You can also resize 960x720 to the more standard 1280x720 to help in compositing and high quality post.
David, I have a question, a report and a small change suggestion for you.
Report:
I'm giving a shot with connectHD and vegas (both on trial) since Premiere is really buggy by itself and crashes more with cineform and I can't really trust this config for work now. Just to inform you 1.5.1 has problems with rendering (stucks in the middle of it) with quite simple sequences, and no nesting and by using only the cineform CC, transition etc. effects, It has problems with exporting also. I get alot of "uknown" errors in doing so. 2.0 Premiere version is more stable but quite slower.
Ok question for Vegas and Connect:
I've converted the (720p MXF 25pn) files with HD link using the "Large Format" and no resizing. I've used the HDV 1280x720 25p. preset on Vegas. Files import ok. however they have black bars on left and right, going to aspect/crop setting on each clip on the timeline and preset-resizing them to 16x9 fixes it BUT crops portions of the clip much more than the safe area in my camera monitor and using the safe area tool on vegas shows that safe are on my edit is even lower than that!I must've done something wrong here I mean I can't think of something other than that the frame is greatly reduced. Premiere didn't do that. Some help?
Suggestion:
The main form on the HDLink tool should be resizable, one cannot see the MXF path and filenames being converted quite well especially on large monitors/display resolutions. Something else, I believe the "prefs" button should be a tab on the HDlink tool. The position is quite awkward right now and not quite intuitive considering one must configure it all the time as the capture folder changes with each p2 card. Overall it is a great tool and my suggestions are here only as a remark to what I believe is a good product.
The issue you had with Premiere must be a setup problem as most of our users are on Premiere Pro 1.5.1 or 2.0, and both products are completely stable. If you have particularly concern file a trouble ticket with www.cineform.com/support, we will help you out even with the trial version.
960x720 in Vegas requires you to change the pixel aspect of the source. We recommend up-resing to 1280x720, as Vegas is good to have to do this anyway.
I agree HDLink needs to be resizable and an improved layout. All planned.
