Chronicle

New action/drama/horror directed by relative newcomer Josh Trank.

Three friends who gain superpowers from a mysterious substance turn on one another when personal problems arise.

Watch this trailer.

As a side-note, that trailer was hilarious and cool. Really looking forward to this.

(though, that red car was so obviously digital... looked like a high schooler just learned how to use Blender...)

That's really interesting. I've never heard of the black list before now. That trailer looks awesome though. I cannot wait until it comes out.

I guess I'm the only one that thinks this looks stupid. Take away the SFX (some of them not so great) and this movie has nothing that interests me.
That and I believe the trailer showed me just about everything I need to know.

It seems to me that SFX is the way to get low budget films instant attention these days. I'm betting the story takes a backseat in this one.

While there's always the chance that the director ignored the story in favor of the VFX, it should be pointed out that a script doesn't get on the blacklist for its inclusion of VFX elements.

I'm right there with ya. Makes you kinda wonder if the 5 people needed to get on the "list" have some kind of financial interest?

Exactly. Certain scripts may be chosen on the fact that people/producers see $$$ when reading them. That doesn't mean the script has to be brilliant.
It just means that someone read it and said... "Kids will flock out to see this s**t!"

Can we read this script somewhere? Has anyone read it?

Maybe it is amazing. The trailer though, it just shows a bunch of kids blowing s**t up and one of them goes too far. I'm guessing he's the villain. :)

Well, the trailer doesn't seem to indicate much more than a lot of SFX shots. Guess we'll see.

Completely disagree. I think it hints at much more than just VFX shots. The dynamic between the three friends and the inevitable falling out, for example. The realistic portrayal of what flawed humans would do with supernatural powers, for another.

The "dynamic" between the three friends? I disagree. It could have been 3 kids causing trouble in a normal way and the dynamic would have been the same. I discussed the falling out above, or the hint at one of them becoming a true villain.

Again, anyone read the script?

Is it really all that much deeper than what I'm seeing in the trailer or is this just an assumption?

Yes.

But it tells me nothing about their relationship.

I'm not knocking the movie, just the trailer. It's a visual spectacle. Nothing more.

I've got my own issues with the presentation... but, nothing more?

I see a very obvious tone thumping throughout the trailer, dark and edgy, and consistent. That's me saying I disagree...and...

Yes... welcome to [today's] reality.

The clear and present advantage of a low-budget feature including Visual Effects or utilizing them to an extreme in interest of recouping income and/or creating net profits in cinema is just part of the evolving business.

If someone wants to make something without VFX, nothing's stopping them from doing that.
