Chroma Paint on arm

 Hello everyone! I just did an experiment with some Chroma Green paint on my arm and have some grabs from the clip. The goal was to discover the glowing cross on the arm and then have it burst into light at the end.

Here are three groups of grabs. The first of each group is the untouched grab. The second is Neo Magic Bullet with some tweaking. The third is Neo Magic bullet with a duplicate layer added in after effects blended with soft light. Which grabs do you like best? You can see some pen marks on my arm from where I first tried to motion track the cross instead of green paint. I did not feel like washing it off since this was only a test. In the future, I will stencil the cross in so it is much thinner and so it has perfect edges, and I will synch the green background to match the cross' movements perfectly.

The The green has been keyed out and replaced with the glowy, brilliant green you see. The cross is supposed to glow green.

Here is a sample clip with the Magic bullet filter Neo tweaked.

Let me know what you think!

The The green has been keyed out and replaced with the glowy, brilliant green you see. The cross is supposed to glow green for the sake of the story.

Hmmm . . . I would think that the effect would be far more dramatic if you keyed in something other than green. Maybe, like the door, or something else more "other worldly." Just my opinion . . .

Well, if the viewer had not seen the green paint on my arm to begin with, it may be different. In the actual movie, I would use paint in after effects to cover the cross up...it would "Melt through the skin to glow brilliant graan. Most of the footage takes place at night and the person will be wearing a black trench coat and fighting with samurai swords, against rotting creatures.

I can see how another color would work in these grabs, because you have seen the original paint and then wonder at the minimal difference. Thank you for your opinions and advice.

You asked what we thought; why make excuses ?

You guys are right! No excuses...Old habits die hard! Which CC do you think works best?

Also, if it does not make sense to use green paint as a key for glowing green, how could I accomplish this effect in another way? I would love to find another way as lining up the layer behind the key out, and getting it to track was dificult.

I just added a sample m4v video clip to my oridinal post with the Magic Bullet filter Neo, with someadjusting. Some known issues, interlaced, and notice the green paint on my right thumb LOL!
Here it is also:

Uhm, I think you should make it white instead. just my opinion. because.. honestly green is an ugly, ugly color.

where do you buy chroma paint? i need to do a few similar effects for a project i want to do and was just going to use masks in after effects, but chroma green paint on the body seems much easier! so, yea.. where could i find some chroma paint?

why does it have to be glowing green? since it's in a shape of a cross, i sense it has to something with some religious plot in your movie.

i don't know about anyone else, but i think because it has to deal with such a controversial subject, i would have some other color than a neon green to portray that. neon green reminds me of a club scene or some kind of bar. i'd key it to a dark color. since the arm is illuminating light out of it, apparently something extraordinary has happened to the main character (either good or bad). any color besides neon/glowing green would work. have some primary color represent what is happening to the character.

Here are some answers for ya.

I got the green paint from:
http://www.chroma-key.com/chroma_key_access.html

The reason it is green is because it is based off of a novel I have written, and that was what was in the novel. The novel takes place in a New York City atmosphere. Just imagine bullets flashing by, and guys in trenchcoats fighting with samurai swords against rotting monsters, leaping out of people, while time is frozen around them.
The cross represents a branding of sorts for the "good guys" It is how they realize they are chosen. I am going for a shining green, like a slightly glowing, highly reflective cross, but I can't seem to create it.

For the story, it has to be green. (Everything in this story is dark except the brilliantly glowing crosses) but how could I go about creating this green, without it being crap? That is why I ran this test. I am slowly experimenting with different effects in the movie so I can refine them for the future.

Thank you in advance.

I'd worry more about the rotting monsters effects than the glowing cross, personally. Not trying to write your movie for you or anything, but id guess that a tattoo would be cooler, the whole glowing green thing reminds me of really bad sci-fi.

true true. Is there a luminescent type of paint that would work better? I don't want as much bright flat glowy green as shimmering reflecting green. It should kind of look like a tattoo that has its own light.
