The XL2 is gone and the HVX has arrived...along with a Kessler crane, Merlin and in a week or 2 the Brevis adapter. Exciting times.
So now I'm deep in debt...but thankfully I've got those nice Panasonic colours to keep the blues away.
Here's a couple grabs from the weekend...

And here's a clip of me and a mate's first play with the crane. It's a bigish file...any smaller and the noise becomes distracting.

I'm loving this gear. The HVX has great colours and very nice softness. Oversharpened video is a thing of the past...Halleluiah brother. Using P2 is a joy even with Vegas (but a 4g card ain't nearly enough!) and the width of the lens adds a new dimension to my shooting (stock xl2 lens is a little too narrow). I'm missing the easy and sharp focusing of the xl2 and the long lens...and it hurts me to shoot sports footage now. The HVX is perfect for narrative work but imo its softness works against it here. And it's interlaced footage doesn't match the xl2's. That said, the HVX's pluses far outweigh its minuses.
The Kessler is a nice piece of equipment. Solid and easy to setup and use. Though as you'll notice in the clip we've got plenty of practice ahead of us.
The Merlin is remarkable. This device is part of the reason I decided on the HVX in the first place. A truly floating cam. It's a heavy setup and I tire quickly (and feel it the next day), tilting is difficult and the learning curve to get consistent results is steep. But I'm floored by the results, even at this early stage. It's a huge bonus for production value. Mounting the Brevis and the HVX on the Merlin should make for some nice footage. I'll post a clip when the Brevis arrives.
