Chosing JVC HD-110 over HVX

After going to B@H yesterday, spending hours trying out both cameras, I think I'm going with the JVC. The ergonomics are fantastic, while the handling of the HVX is beyond bad.

Anyway, what do you guys do about a deck for transfering and editing 720/24p footage? Will any mini-dv cheapo camera play out the video signal through firewire? or will you need an HDV camera to play the signal out of it's deck via firewire to and NLE? Thanks for any responses.

There is only one deck that will play back JVC's ProHD 720P24 properly. It is the BR-HD50U.
If you are recording DV and not HDV, then any miniDV deck should do.

JVC also has an older consumer HDV deck that will work with 720P30 and allow ingest of 720P24 or 25. I think it is called the CU-VH1?
It will not show you 720P24 or 25 footage on the screen though.

Yes, Tim is right. The CU-VH1 will work just fine but the LCD will only display 30p. Nevertheless, it will ingest all ProHD framerates so it is a good alternative to the BR-50 deck (for the $$$$).

$1,700 is still pretty pricey, especially since it doesn't do the 24P as nice as the BR-50. I believe I've seen the BR-50 going for close to that price on B&H's ebay store, which would make it a no brainer.

Not so fast. The CU-VH1 will work off of the stock battery for about 3 hours which makes it an excellent field solution for your tapes (convenient dailies anyone?). So the CU-VH1 brings more to the table than just the deck function. Of course this works for 30p (not 24fps), but with the BR50 deck you get no LCD screen at all and you're slaved to the NLE or component out connection.

The CU-VH1 brings unique plus's to the equation.

Thanks for the responses guys. Went to B@H again yesterday to make a final decision. The JVC is definately the one. A very nice camera for the price. I think the HVX creates a better image but the design of the camera is just awful..

Most people using the HVX arre actually shooting 720p I know I do weekly. I also use the JVC about once or twice a fortnight, peronally at 720p I prefer the JVC. But people higher prefer the DVCPRO 4:2:2 delivery via p2.

I wouldn't be quick in agreeing with you on this. Depends on what your shooting, where your shooting, how your shooting, lighting, etc. I had the opportunity to visit Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania twice in the past 2 months. Once with the HVX the other with the HD110. I shot some of the same scenes with both cameras and was quite surprised at the images from the HD110. I'll post some clips soon but I agree with ncje, for 720P I prefer the stock JVC over the stock HVX.

Now for variable frame rates, low light and a whole array of other HVX goodies, I prefer the HVX but that's another discussion.

So, can I use this deck (CU-VH1) to capture 24p footage onto my system, or does it only playback 30P?
Is it just the monitor that just can't playback 24p?

Exactly. You can use it for a deck for any of the ProHD formats. It's just that the LCD will not display 24p.

a serious opinion

yeah i totally love cameras. The jvc product seems really good though, that is if in fact you are capturing video - and not small animals. Wait a minute, were not capturing animals. They are though, they are in head, attacking my mind from the inside out. Please stop!!
Seriously though, any hd camera rulz. For real. I rule.
I love cameras. I am a camera.
The hvx is not the ultimate, neither is the jvc.
all cameras rule. all.
all.

The LCD, nor the video outputs. There's no way to monitor what you're playing on the deck itself.

But if you have the deck connected to a computer that's displaying the incoming HD stream, then it's fine. I used an HD1 to capture 24p footage from an HD100; the HD1 couldn't display the footage on its LCD or on its video outputs, but Sony Vegas software did display the firewire transport stream so I could still use it to capture.

The HD1/HD10/C1U can "transport" HD100 24p footage, but they can't display it.

Thanks Barry for your clearing that up, JVC makes it a bit unclear on their site. I might just get the Focus HD to capture my footage on the HD100, keeping the similar workflow on my HVX that I recently sold.
