Hi, I have AE 6.5 installed & tried to copy some Chinese characters from MS Word document & paste into my composition in AE. Most of the text displayed their Chinese characters properly, while others only displayed the ???? symbol in place of the Chinese characters. I need to know how to rectify this problem fast.

Thank you in advance for your replies for help.

why not go to dafonts.com and get a free set of Chinese characters, drop them into your fonts folder, then go from there? Makes it a lot easier

Hi Hawk. Thanks for your suggestion, but I will need to copy the chinese characters from MS Word since my client has e-mailed me some biographies in the Chinese characters & I'm supposed to copy & paste from MS Word into the text editor in AE 6.5.

Should I try uninstalling & re-installing my AE 6.5 again to see if this can solve the problem of some chinese characters only displaying as ??? & others displaying correctly? Btw, how do I download the free set of chinese characters from dafonts.com that you suggested?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Hawk,

Nope, that was not the kind of text fonts I was looking for. The text that are already in the MS Word document are actual Chinese traditional characters, not alpha-numeric roman letters. I need to copy & past these Chinese traditional characters into Adobe After Effects & render some effects from AE. However in AE, only some of the Chinese traditional characters can display properly, the others just display a ???? symbol.

Please help if you can. Thank you.

I didn't look through Hawks answers thoroughly, but I would just try screen grabbing the word document and then bringing in the jpg/tif file or whatever. This route would give you a rasterized font. That maybe problematic depending on what you are doing, it may not.

If you have Illustrator, you could screen grab the desired characters and import the photo, then "live trace" it for continually rasterizable vector art. That way you could just import the .ai file into AE and go from there.

Hello all,

Thank you for all your suggestions. Unfortunately, doing a screen grab of the chinese characters isn't much of an option because I need to do some sort of vertical scrolling credits (like when a movie ends, they have the vertical scrolling credits, etc) Rasterizing the file would greatly compromise the quality of the characters & plus the scrolling credits is quite long. So I will still have to find a way to copy from MS Word to AE because the person who sent the text sent it using MS Word document.

You can still use the screen capture method for credits, just stack one pic on top or the other, precompose them all, and scroll the comp.

If you are seeing the chinese characters in word and you just cant in AE, highlight them all, turn them into english with a font like Arial, and find chinese fonts that match the letters.

You can also try this:

http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/

feed a picture in, it identifies the font used.
