Chinese 2K RAW S35 Cinema Camera, 8000 dollars

Hmmm David that is a good bet....

RED seems DAmn close..... but this thing may spring in to action pretty fast.....

Looks like they slapped that together with off the shelf OEM parts. We will see, I have a feeling that the firmware is going to be the big challenge on something like this.

It really looks like a PC with a PL mount.

Not bad, for a first try.

What do you think a RED, F3, AF100 or HDSLR are? PC's with Lens mounts. Th,e better known ones just have prettier packaging. I wouldnt care if it were a square box if it did what it was supposed to.

I still remember how huge the Dalsa Origin Camera looked. THAT was really like a PC case with lens.

-this looked way better.

In this case I literally mean that it looks like it might have an intel or some other x86 type processor. I have no idea really, am not too sure it really matters unless we are talking about battery life. I am not nocking this camera.

All of the cameras you mention use a FPGA or some type of dedicated processor for specific camera functions. This camera might also be using that type of technology as well.

One big advantage of going the x86 route is it would be a lot easier to develop and potently it could be very modular. I like the idea for buying a camera new egg style.

This is a rule we implemented in 2003, and one of the pillars and foundations of why DVXUser still works after eight years and explosive growth. Political discussion destroys communities. If you want to discuss political issues there are many, many, many, many, many other places to do so. DVXUser is not the place to do so.

And thank goodness for it. If you want to see just how ugly a site can get when politics is introduced you need only head to personal-view.com. The site is full of great tips for the GH2, good group buys, ... and the most vehement anti-western, anti... well, you name it, views imaginable. I keep trying to contribute there, but it's gotten harder and harder to get past the politics. In short: thank you Barry.

That might just as well be the future. You buy a sensor block, and a la carte everything else.

You might love the FS-100... it sure is boxy.

Yep, and the AF100 ain't now beauty queen either. None of the new digital cinema cameras are especially visual alluring. I think that is part of being a "Geek". You can see the beauty in a boxy device, based on its capabilities and function.

Wow, now that camera's had a good hard beating with the ugly stick..... very agricultural design!

Seriously though as others have said if it shakes things up and pushes the usual suspects to do better etc then that can only be a good thing!

I believe the Aaton Penelope will record to CinemaDNG as well as a proxy codec (QT wrapped of some of codec) or 35mm film.

THis is very interesting, indeed. Its probably 2 generations off of a real desirable product. It looks like a gen 1 Red One with a much more competitive price. But seeing at how CHinese tend to develop and improve in an incredible pace, I can imagine them coming out with a Epic like form factor 2K camera in a short timeframe, at a very competitive price point. When that comes, the pressure is on the established manufacturers.

I have to agree, competition is good. The more accessible high end imagery becomes, the more it will be about the talent. People thinking that having cheaper cameras is a disaster for the industry are people that are protecting their place in the market, a place they have based on the gear they own or use, not on the talent.

Would kill for the S16 version.... + a set of S16 S4's, S16 Super speeds or S16 Illuminas..... aww man... awesome...

Looks interesting, and agreed, competition is always good. I just wish that these up and coming companies did one thing different, and that's just wait until a product is ready to actually ship and just unleash it on the world. We've seen too many prototypes not materialize. Just get it out there, get it in the hands of some well known DP's and sell it wide and far.

People should be thrilled!

That said, the real money isnt in the hardware, its in the software. People can complain all they want about Slog costing $3600, but its not the "slog" hardware thats expensive, its the software... The Epic chip is essentially the same as a REDoneMX. The difference is partially in some new hardware, but most likely in the new software, the "color science" the interpolation of that RAW data..... thats whats expensive. i mean you can go back and reinterprit old REDONE-M with the new Color science and it looks like new footage.

No doubt. I wish this thing were shipping. I agree that this may never see the light of day. I hope that it actually does....but many a project dies at this stage. :( I hope this one is different. Time will tell....we'll see how long we have to wait before it launches....or dies with a whimper.

As Steve Jobs said "real artists ship" - it's all in the delivery. Anyone can make ambitious and beautiful plans and even prototypes, but to bring stuff to market that's what separates the men from the boys... perfect example: RED... insanely ambitious, but a bit handicapped in the execution department. That's where the big boys earn their keep - execution; it takes a Panasonic, an Arri, a Canon etc.

I'm of course as excited as the next guy by this camera, and competition is always good. BUT, you know what - this is going to be (speculatively) $8K... and today I would have no hesitation about shooting a feature on something much less "specced" than even this - I'll take an AF100, or FS100, thank you very much, for under $5K (body). I know I'll be murdered in a minute by a ton of people denouncing me, but I want to say: folks, it's all moving downstream. I fully expect truly indy cinema to work on $5K (body) cams, and even - GASP! - lower, like the GH2, for $1K (body). Yeah, yeah, I know, we're not talking hollywood, but the new creative energy and the new generation, the barriers have really come down gear-wise. It's always been ultimately about the talent and not the gear, but today that's even more underlined, because really, there's gear for practically every budget. What you still can't buy off the shelf for cheap - even in China - is talent.

This is a long-winded way of saying that from my point of view, all this is the last battle of yeasteryear and fighting the last war gear-wise, people getting excited by an $8K video cam... meh, I'm starting a project with a $1K GH2, so I don't care what happens to this camera. Scarlet, shmarlet, Epic Shmepic, whateves. Bring on the $2K and under cams - it's the face of the new REVOLUTION!!!

1K? How about the the under 500 dollar revolution (that fits in your pocket)? Plenty of action there from the HX9...and soon the NEX5N. (Oh and they either fit in your pocket...or almost anyway) :)

Just imagine, in 18 months, the price of a HX9 will be about 150usd (used). Try that on for size. Three 1080/60P camera shoot for under 500usd! Those days are here!!!! Exciting times I tell ya!!!

I agree BTW. Shoot with what's available now. I still hope they bring this (8K RAW) to market all the same. :)
