Chinese 2K RAW S35 Cinema Camera, 8000 dollars

I've been wondering when someone else is going to use CinemaDNG. I can't say anything about how solid it is as a codec, but I know that Adobe (if I'm not mistaken...this is from memory folks) made this an Open Source codec for future video raw efforts in the industry. (Correct me if I'm wrong here.)

Very interesting, I hope it comes out to shake this industry up. If you follow the sensor and processor industry, you can see the technology is here for affordable raw camera. But it is those big companies that are holding it. I can't see one technological industry where progress is so low or intentionally crippled by marketing. When 8bit codec are the norm for $ 5000 camera when in the photo world for 1/10th of the price you are using 12 bit raw files. There are lot of off the self tech that have been coming out recently. You get a number of s35 sensor boasting some high claim in the noise and dynamic range with their fat pixel.

When you think the power of the little gh2 (hacked). More so the 12 fps 24 megapixel Raw Sony a77 throughput is the same as about 144 fps 2 k raw output. This tell you that with the hardware processing of the A77 with a 2k chip and you would easily get a 24 fps 2k raw cinema camera. This is $ 1500 dslr camera body. You don't have to figure out how those two sister technology compare (basicaly a video camera is a still photo camera shooting at 24fps). I really hope it gets out, what they should add somehow is some more capability even in limited form like a 60 fps burst mode, even for 10, 20, 30.... seconds.

if they come to manufacture a better form factor, and real good quality internals, there is a good chance, many 2k cameras are gonna be sold. Cinema DNG and 12 bit is good for 2011, anyone can buy an SSD, and "prosess" the image, just like film, but digitaly.

I would like to know more about the sensor dinamyc range, (Bayer pattern aparently, and asa400), why only 30p?

I wish them good luck. Maybe i would buy one if the images are quiet right. Remeber its RAW. Raw is fun, and gigas are cheap now.

I'm astounded that it's not a copy of something.

I'm not. You may or may not know, that way back when, in the 50's and 60's, Japan was known for producing a lot of low quality cheapo plastic junk. But they grew up, and eventually went from strict copying to innovation. Today, most cameras come from - you guessed it - Japan. They started out also copying (mostly from the Germans). I have no doubt the Chinese will have a similar trajectory. From cheap junk and rip-off copying, to genuine high quality production and innovation. When will it happen, I don't know, but not too long from now, would be my guess. A friend of mine just had a screen system installed in his home, and the design was from China - not knockoff, the real thing. He worked with the Chinese engineers to get it modified. And let me tell you - they did it for a price you couldn't get here by a country mile (like 75% cheaper), and actually they modified the motor mechanism and you can't get it from any other company in the world. It's starting. Only a matter of time, when people will say "Made in China" with respect, like today they say "Made in Japan" - of course, prices will go up :)

So, we'll see where this goes. Little does that company know....the DVXUser "all seeing eye" is on them now! :)

I like how the body looks "ugly". It tells me that they are working "quick and dirty". I'd love to see them continue with the same objective in mine: Get it working. Make sure it's stable. THEN make it pretty. (Please release BEFORE making it pretty....I'd LOVE to shoot with an UGLY RAW cinema cam)

Here's my thumbs up and positive energy going out to this little company in China! I hope they complete the product soon. I hope they sell enough to continue their efforts and move forward with progressive momentum!!!!

Barry, I have much respect for you. MUCH. For this to just be deleted is giving in to human suffering. Plus it goes so much further. This effects EVERYONE's way of life. It will lead to two classes. Uber rich and UBER poor. No in between. PERIOD.

You'll buy it on eBay and there will be no way to contact whoever built it (you probably won't even know), and you have to put it together yourself. But it costs a little less.

This is a rule we implemented in 2003, and one of the pillars and foundations of why DVXUser still works after eight years and explosive growth. Political discussion destroys communities. If you want to discuss political issues there are many, many, many, many, many other places to do so. DVXUser is not the place to do so.

Better wait and see what happens before critisizing. Lately they are getting better and better in customer support from the rig manufactures. The quality... and price also is getting up, still being very competitive. Some of those companies now know that if they want to be in the long run they have to get better product and services.

The problem are not the Chinese but the mind-set of the American European manufactures. Most of the internals of this camera are going to come from western or Japanese company. There have been a bunch of releases of S35 sensors from various manufacturers. But take this example of a small manufacturer at Nab. So the guy device a $ 20000 plus high 720p Raw camera. It will be just a niche market. I tell why did he not take the R&D, building around one of those S35 sensor and bring a 2k raw with just reasonable 24p to 60p camera at an affordable price. Something that would cater for a large majority of use and users, rather than such a niche market. He would have a market in the tens of thousand which would bring him more stability and better price due to volume sale.

The price of technology in todays video world has nothing to bear to the reality of the cost of the R&D and components. People just fix them next to other model. So if you are in cinema your camera should be more than $ XXXXX. For broadcast more than $ XXXXX. They don't see that their is a world of opportunities and much more volume that they think, ala HDSLR revolution.

Interesting...I'd be curious to know about the sensor tech they are using. I wonder if they are doing an in camera debayer from a larger sensor to a 2k raw format or if they are just doing a straight dump from a 2k sensor...

Tis is definitely something to keep an eye on...

There are some innovations there that we will probably (hopefully) see in other cameras soon, especially the choice of different lens mount (End user field selectable, maybe?) and the use of SSDs directly in the camera. This is definitely something to keep an eye on.
