FS7: Chick filmed with 1200mm (crop) vintage Nikkor 200-600

I am saving my money for a Canon 200-400mm lens, I am affraid that will take 15 years so I spend some time with old lenses.

Bought the Nikkor 200-600 F9.5 for 300 euro.
This focal length has some problems in warm weather due to atmospheric conditions. So I call it a winter lens.

But for this clip I filmed a chick at 1200mm (crop), a bit more exiting than a house. Focus is mostly random. F22 shutter 1/100. Backlight.

Tried center crop 1200mm equiv. and 600mm.

What is the use of this lens?
A prop in an old espionage movie?

1200mm crop sucks.

I hate to be a party pooper but that looks pretty bad. The softness and halation and how it responds to all the higlights make it totally unusable.

If you're on a budget then look at the Contax Zeiss 300mm f4. Around £200.

You can get a 1.4 and 2x Contax Mutar extender to get you into decent wildlife focal ranges, and you can use centre crop.

Thanks Ben, you didn't ruin my party. But I will have a look at Contax primes.

The lens is unusable indeed, focusing is a nightmare and it is big and heavy.
And older reviews of this lens don't praise it for it's quality.
Also the lens collected a lot of dust last 40 years.

That's why the lens is for sale as a collectors item or as a prop for a John leCarré movie .

The party was already ruined when the "chick" turned out to be fowl.

I am doing photo and video as well for a client with agricultural background. 10 yrs ago I bought the Canon 100-400 and soon I found out that in summer daylight I mostly cannot go over 200mm due to heat haze. The 70-200/f4 does the job better as it's much lighter

The Sigma is great. Can't remember which is the cheaper model but it's the best one :)

Nice. Thinking about getting one. I dont do enough long-lens work to justify buying anything more expensive. So Contemporary it is. The Sports is much better built, but weighs a kilo or more, and the optical quality is identical so.

I recently purchased the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary EF mount with Sigma MC-11 adaptor for mounting on FS7 and very pleased with image quality from initial testing. Also used on GH4 with Metabones adaptor.

Do all the functions work on the FS7? Does autofocus work?
Autofocus of the Tamron with metabones doesn't work.

@f22 The softness and halation is most likely due to diffraction. The lens should to be tested at f11 or so. That being said, it looks like the lens lacks contrast which I would expect from a lens at that price range.

The sigma 150-600 C is the best bang for you buck and your back. I've been using it lots this summer and it's been performing beautifully.

I tested the Nikkor 200-600 at F11 and the Tamron at f9.

Just sold the nikkor 200-600 to a collector. (with a little profit so I am trading up).
I keep the Nikkor 50-300mm this is a very nice lens. Parfocal, (better than the Tamron which isn't) all range F4.5 sharp and simple.

I spend some time on http://www.photozone.de (is in English). Very good reviews here. Looking for a 400mm prime. The Canon 400mm f5.6 got a good review but then I read the review of the canon 100-400 EF f4.5-5.6 USM L IS ll wich seems a very good lens and even better than the Canon 400 prime. But again twice the price (with extender) of the Sigma 150-600.

But a 100-400 mm zoom with extender is lighter than a 2.8 kg superzoom.

So far my lightweight outdoor wishlist is: a decent 16-70 zoom and 100-400mm zoom and an 1.4 extender. (And to get closer to the scene, an Harry Potter invisibility cloak).
:-)
