Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

Ok sorry I've been so long guys...

I purchased the GS-9 first, and I liked the 20x zoom, and some of the digital effects, but since it does not have timecode I returned it and got the pv-dv-103 (panasonic) at circuitcity.com for about $309 (which includes free shipping but I chose to pay $10 bucks more because I wanted it more quickly.

The pv-dv-103 does have timecode which is the reason why I returned the GS-9. I have not captured with it yet, but I don't know why there would be any problems.

If I had wanted a cheap camera just to use for fun, I would get the GS-9, but since I wanted a cheap camera to use as a substitute for a deck, having the timecode is important to me, so I got the pv-dv-103.

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

thats stupid. did you try to capture off of it? does it not work off the timecode on tape from the DVX with the NLE?..i want 20x AND timecode.  is that too much to ask? LOL,   oh well.. thanks for the reply!

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

Yeah I wanted 20x and timecode too...

So you just have to decide...

...........20x zoom..........or timecode.....................20x zoom............or timecode.........................................................................

Which is more important?

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

So I'm still confused.

Can or cannot the PV-DV103 understand DVX timecode?

The PV-GS12 generated its own TC when recording but read goose eggs when playing back a tape shot on my DVX. This is NG...

Borrowed a friend's Canon ZR-80 and this camera seemed to understand the DVX's timecode, but the battery went south after about five seconds and I don't have his charger. So tests are somewhat inconclusive still...

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

The DV103 does understand the timecode, plus the battery and charger work for the DVX. It's on sale on the circuit city website, I plan on ordering mine this week.

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

I tried 4 different cameras to no avail. Seems the Panasonic cameras have the timecode feature but I could not find one to read a tape shot from the DVX, If you have captured using a DVX tape and it reads the timecode please post.

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

..im going to take an old tape with me into best buy and other places to test all the ones ive got my eye on.

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

Excuse me, Storyp24...

Do you mean you have tried four different PV-DV103s to no avail? Or that you have tried four different low-end models of Panasonic camcorders...

I assume the latter, but does this testing include the PV-DV103?

TC posted and says it WORKS...

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

To iamloser,

I thought of doing this too...going around w/ an old tape and seeing what works, but the problem is that (at least in Los Angeles) the PV-DV103 is a special order item only...that is to say if you walk in to brick-and-mortar Circuit City or Best Buy or Fry's it's not going to be there...

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

:) ..thats fine, i dont have to test that one as we already know it works. I just want to test a variety of other options out there to see what sort of cam i should get. if it was only for a deck i would just order the afore mentioned PV-DV103 , but well use it for some family video stuff too im sure, so i want to get one with the most features i think well use. of course theyre all just little toys, but i still want to get the most for my money.

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

Sorry about being vague in my last post about trying four cameras. It has been a long and frustrating experience. Here is what learned to date from a previous post:

I have been through numerous cameras and brands trying to find one that would allow timecode and post to a monitor for output to VHS. Panasonic pro division did not know which cameras are compatible with DVX.
Just tried my 4th camera from Circuit City, it is a panasonic pv gs15. the timecode worked on the demo model at the store but the one I brought home new did not run the timecode. Apparently the differenent models read different lines on the tape and now it seems it varies by camera.
If any one is using a mini DV camera that will display timecode I would love to know about it. Also tried the panasonic 120 model as well as sony and canon.
Also tried a Canon, it read the timecode but the audio would not capture correctly. Also tried a Sony model but not sure of the Model number now.

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

...make sure you go through the settings cause in alot of the consumer cameras you have to turn timecode function on in some obscure menu setting.

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

To repeat (Look back at my previous post on this topic) the 103 has been bringing my DVX footage (including timecode )into Premier Pro perfectly since early this year. Haven't captured one minute with the DVX since getting it.

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

Sorry about posting too soon, but wanted to add that it sure looks like you have something else going on if every one of the other cameras isn't seeitng it either.

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

BTW, I learned that the PV-DV103 has been discontinued, which is why Circuit City is giving them away for a song.

When they're gone, they're gone...

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

Yeah if you are looking for a cheap camera to use as a deck, get this one by all means.

I've been using it to capture all my stuff (except the I captured about 20 minutes with my dvx only because I wanted to make sure it did capture).

So REPEAT, It DOES have TIMECODE! IT DOES play back the tapes recorded in the DVX (I use mq's) with NO problem that I have discovered.

Negative things.
-no S-video
-no a/v in
-only 10x zoom

Also, the battery that came with the 103 works with the DVX, and you can use the charger too I think..

At $308...... go for it. If it's still available.

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

Would like to verify what thinketernity just posted.

PV-DV103 came in the mail today...TC works beautifully from DVX tapes...can't be happier.

You just have to switch it out of counter mode and into TC mode in one of the menus.

:) :) :)

Re: Cheepo deck -> camera for playback

DV103D does it have 24pa and the pulldown, 16x9 and has anyone used it with Final Cut HD Thank you

Damn it, I hate when people abreviate Time Code because I always get confused and think they're talking about me.
