Check out my first demo reel

Hey everyone,

I'm cutting together my first demo reel, and I wanted to get some feed back on my rough cut. Here's the link: http://demo.blazingoat.com/

It's a 30mb QT file compressed in Sorenson Squeeze.

I'm looking for feedback in the following areas:

1) Web compression tips (Best quality vs File Size)

2) Some of the clips seem to be too dark when viewed on computer monitor (they look fine on an NTSC display though) - How cant this be fixed?

2) Comments/suggestions on Pacing/editing of the reel

3) Any comments on the content (Cinematography)

So yeah, let me know what you guys think, and what I should change before I finilaze the reel and post it live on my new website. I'm still waiting for copies of footage from several other projects that I want to include as well.

quality and size are good.
Some of the shots do look really dark.. almost all black
It's a little long and I feel you could cut some things out. (ex. dark shots)
content was pretty cool. You got some really nice shots in there.

I'm wondering.. how big was the file before sorenson squeeze?

also.. did you need/get permission to film at Pearson Airport? I might be shooting there in the summer

The file was about 1gig in size (DV AVI) before sorenson squeeze.

I've shot two projects @ pearson airport. The first one was a short called "Sweden on $8 a Day" - you can watch the whole thing here: http://sweden.blazingoat.com
For that film, we got permission to film in the terminal for a few hours (we told them it was student film blah blah blah), of course we weren't allowed past the security checkpoints. You have to go through the Greater Toronto Airport's Authority to get permision. They were very co-operative because it was a very simple shoot - two crew memebers and one actor with a handheld camera and that was it. (Trying to get permission for anything larger is a nightmare and costs $$$$).

The other shot in the reel with the plane passing over head of the two characers was shot in Mississauga on the outscrits of the airport with no permit. We were only there for an hour or so , and no one bothered us.

Just get permission and keep it small, and you shouldn't have a problem with the airport. Make sure you have all your documentation with you when you're in there, because EVERY secrutity person who sees you will stop you until they confirm that you have permission. They are VERY strict.

Deinterlace, show the best stuff first, keep it short. That's what the reel was missing IMHO.

I liked it.. but..

It looked like a good portion of it was shot interlaced... I recommend de-interlacing or using field interpolation to smooth it out.

Maybe it is just me, but i hate watching interlaced video on a computer screen, it just makes things look way to jaggie for my tastes..

but I liked the reel overall.. great choice of music... dissolved girl, great song.
 
Loki and mimik, Thanks! I'm going to try de-interlacing. Can I do that in Sorenson?
Also, some of the footage in the reel IS progressive, can de-interlace the ENTIRE reel or just the select clips that were shot interlaced?

Anyone else have any comments? I'd REALLY like to hear them!!!

Definitely needs to be tightened up. Make sure to show your "absolute BEST"...there were a few shots that I felt could be left out or at least cut down a few seconds.

Footage looks great! BTW...I don't think you can de-interlace in Sorenson, but I could be wrong.
