Building it... it's starting to sound like a good idea. Hmm...

i duno...i think building a cpu is a pain in the ass, i would rather place an order and in 2-6 weeks get a nice spankin new machine at my front door waiting for me to install some shite and get crackin...

we order our machines from

http://www.bellcomputer.com/
these guys rock, they supplt alot of rental machines to big effects houses all over L.A. and they also sell machines...

i will probably always get my laptops from these guys...
http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.html
they manufacture the laptops that BOXX uses, BOXX just slaps a BOXX logo on it and sells it for 600 bucks more...great prices for some powerfull gear...the 9880 i have is screaming fast...faster then alot of our workstations at work...

another place we get gear from is..
http://www.pcclub.com/
these guys are cool cause they are nation wide, and have stores that you can go to and configure systems, and, if something goes wrong, you can just take it in, and if they dont carry something, they will hunt it down for you. its like having a home built system with a warranty.

anyway, just thought i drop some info...

I'll have to crunch the numbers... see if the extra cost is worth the convenience.

Those are great links, thanks Rich!

TC, we're building ours and we don't know ****!!!!!!! You should do it, so if you run into any probs, you can call me up and give me advice.

Slim's thread got me thinking about the new system I want to pick up. What do you think?
I have a similar system:

Dell Dimension P4 3.4 ghz
2x125MB SATA RAID 0
2 GB RAM
Sound Blaster Audigy2

Matrox RTX100
Matrox Parhelia

But, I would recommend against the RTX100 unless you are mostly editing 60i/30p video. The card doesn't have support for other frame rates. So kiss goodbye editing 24p and especially 24pa with the card. There's been a lot of bummed out RTX100 users because of this. Oh, and Matrox's solution is to have you buy their Axio (~$7500) editing card. No thanks.

With the speed of processors/memory/video cards it's getting to the point that real time rendering can be done in software rather than with a dedicated card.

Also, as Rich mentioned, the nVidia is a great video card. I have one at work and it's smokin' fast. My Parhelia card at home works fine but... don't get it just for multi-monitor support.

Speaking of editing and the Nvidia 7800, has anyone been able to test the new Magic Bullet For Editors which claims it can now render in real-time with the 7800?

Provocative... so it sounds like all the Matrox stuff is out. That's a total bummer about 24p!

Anyone have any thoughts on a good break-out box? I'm sick of leaving a little mini-dv cam attached to my computer/ monitor at all times.

dazzles work pretty well for that...i like them.

479.00

359.00

the 359.00 should be more then enough. there are a few differences between the two there, but i highly doubt you'd notice too much

BUILD IT BRO. you've got tons of help here. if you run into any problems you've got the forum. i doubt you will- the hardest part (if its your first time) is getting the motherboard resets and power buttons working :P

Once you build a machine, you wont want to buy a prebuilt again :D it will save you shitloads of money- plus you KNOW you're getting good hardware this way.

If you using premiere pro and cineform it's advisable according to cineform to use matrox parhelia avpe isn't it?

Yeah, that's one area where EVERYONE can agree that Macs lag.

Building it... it's starting to sound like a good idea. Hmm...

Zach- Where did you find that price on the 7800?

Once you build your own, you'll never buy again. Truuuuuust me!

If you can find someone to build it for you...its well worth it. I spent 1800 on mine and its all your getting from dell and more. I ordered everything from Newegg.

Unless you're completely inept or really, really, really hate the idea of it, I strongly suggest you assemble it yourself. It will give you insight into how your computer works like you wouldn't believe. When you know every inch of the insides, you can almost feel what's going on in there from the keyboard, and if anything goes wrong, you'll know what it is.

Your new system looks sweet TC. I will vouch for the matrox product line if the new cards are half as good as my old reliable RT2500 and millenium g450 dual head. It's a real pleasure to watch dv quality footage on my 20" tv as I'm editting. Turning 3d renders into avi or mov files using DV compression rocks also. My next card will be the RTX100 pro and parhelia. Hope your new gig works out!
