Check my Specs (New PC)

Resident Agitator
Slim's thread got me thinking about the new system I want to pick up. What do you think?

I'll be running the Adobe suit (PPro, After Effects, Photoshop, etc.) As well as Maya 7 (yikes, that's what I'm REALLY worried about. )

Order from Dell: XPS400

Pentium D 3 Ghz (Dual)
2 GB RAM
500 GB RAID 0 (2 x250 SATA)
Dual Drives: 16x DVD ROM and 16x DVD+/-RW
Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS (w/ 5.1)

Then add:

Matrox Parhelia (256 Mb)
Matrox RT. X100
More firewire ports
2 ViewSonic G220fb monitors

I'll get a Xeon if you want to cough up the extra green for it.

that a dual core system?

that system will run maya 7 no problem...why the parhelia?

on a bit of a side note...we have professional nvidia quadro dcc's at the office, and my laptop with nvidia 6800 smokes them all...seriously, its not even a contest..i bring my laptop in to do hardware renders. its just sick how much faster the game cards are compared to the pro cards...all our new systems will have nvidia 7800s..i just dont see the advatage of the hi end g cards anymore...

dude build it. seriously- people here can help you with that. total waste buying from dell- wayyyy overpriced. i gaurantee you can build that system for 2/3 to half the price dell's selling it at. their support sucks anyway, and most places like new egg where you get parts have warranties on the parts anyway. if you decide to go dell, that's a kickin system though ! gl whatever you do TC!

Rich- I was thinking about the Parhelia for using an external monitor for Maya. Perhaps just go with the 6800 instead?

do you mean to run 2 monitors? the 6800 ultra is a dual head card...if thats what you mean...

dude...nvidia 7800. get that. thats what i'm getting for my pc i'm building. it kicks the 6800's ass. and you can pick it up for like 330-350 bucks

Rich- I plan on running 2 monitors, as well as putting out a video signal to a production monitor (through the RT X.100), and I was under the impression that I could use it for Maya as well, running the parhelia.

Zach- I've thought about building it... still might. We'll see.

Zach

I have nothing but good things to say about Dell; bought my last 5 machines from them and my current system kicks ass (Just under $3000.00). (Of course with the Nvidia QFX 256 MB)

.02

TC-not sure about runing a signal out to a monitor...check and see if you can do that with the nvida cards...

zach- yeah the 7800's would be the way to go now...but for real, these cards are just getting mad fast...the 6800 card still kicks ass...want to check out the 7800's soon..

oh i agree- if you're buying consumer go dell. BUT why not build it? its fun, and it costs half as much. i spec'd an AMD 64 bit with a gig of ram, 250 gig hd, and the 7800 for under 1000 bucks. TC, i would go AMD if i were you. better performance in my opinion. and a bit cheaper- you aren't paying for the INTEL name

Okay, so I'll pick up the 6800 (or 7800 if the budget allows for it.)

See, that's why you always research before you buy. Thanks guys.

Man that sounds like a kickin system. Wish I had somethin like that for gaming.
What, you saying it's not up to par w/ video editing? You pretentious Apple user. *Insert sarcasm smiley*

hey to each his own right? ;) I'm sure it'll smoke at an edit too. Now to really test it get into some hardcore compositing and effects.

I just hate the fact that macs get the games like a year after they come out on pc. Hopefully with this intel switch it'll get more inline with modern gaming times.

ps: sorry to threadjack

pss: I'd also recommend building your own... same components, much cheaper.

Yeah, that's one area where EVERYONE can agree that Macs lag.

Building it... it's starting to sound like a good idea. Hmm...

Zach- Where did you find that price on the 7800?
