"Check Card" message on HMC150

I just shot some test footage while scouting a location for an upcoming job. 5 minutes in, I got a message on the camera when trying to record: "Check Card." The camera would no longer record or playback files on that card. I switched cards and everything was fine on the new card.
Two quesitons:
1. Is there any way to retrieve the files on that card?
2. If this was the actual job and that happened, I'd be in trouble? How can I feel safe that this won't happen on the job? These are 16gb class 6 sdhc cards. Obviously, I won't use the card that gave me problems. I've had the camera 6 months, and this is the first time this happened.

Thanks, Danny1280

Do a search for check card... tons of stuff on this.

What brand is the card? And did you format the card in the camera?

Hi "Mad"

I used a Delkin class 6 card. And yes, it was formatted in the camera.
I'm not concerned with getting the data back from that card at this point.
But I'm planning a commercial shoot this Friday, and want to feel safe I won't lose the data--thousands going into this shoot and would be impossible to reshoot.

Does anyone have advice for the most reliable cards? Brand Names? Class?

I third that, having gone through the check card nightmare with a Made in Taiwan Transcend 16gB (see main thread). The Sandisk is expensive but it's worth having a couple at least for your most critical filming.

Thanks for the advice, all.
I went to B&H and picked up a couple of those.
The guy there gave me a tip that he said he heard from the SD card manufacturers:
Apparently most card failures happen within the first 7 times you format the card. So the tip is to format the card at least 7 times before using it. If it hasn't failed, then you're more likely to be safe.

I have a 16gig panasonic that does the same thing. I just have to reformat in the card to make it record again. It only does this when I hit the record button. Never had a issue getting footage off the card tho.

True, I had that happen when I formatted in the computer to see the difference.

All you do is ignore the warning and navigate to formatting the card in the camera - if fixes it.

Reminder to always format cards before using!! :violent5:

I'm sometimes getting the check card warning with any one of my 5 cards when I change a card. When the warning comes up, it does not give me access to the menu and will not let me format the card. I turn off the camera, wiggle the card in the slot a little bit and it usually works after that. I may have a connection problem that I will have to send the camera in for.

Mine does that too so more likely just the cameras reaction to a changed card.

Let me guess... its a 16GB card and something was shot continuously ? Then suddenly ... Zip

Been there before. I had it checked by the company and they found Zip!

It happened to me before and wrote about this 2 months ago.
I shot something continuously with a 16GB card. Didn't have problems with smaller capacity cards.

We had one of our brand new Sandisk Extreme III cards get this response (check card) when we first put it in the camera - and the camera would not allow us to format the card in camera. The card showed up fine in Macs and PCs. We tried many things until finally d'loading Panasonic's SDFormatter V2.0 and using it to format the card. The card has been fine since.
