does anyone just buy a cheapo minidv camera ($300.00 or so) to use for rewinding and playback of tapes? i figure this would be a good cheap way to save the dvx's motor and could use in the field (snowboarding/skateboarding locations) as well as save the motor in transfer.... any thoughts?

This has been covered MANY MANY MANY times. Try using the search function.

PS: A ton of people do it.

NO!

a cheapo camera won't work. You have to use your DVX. once you put a tape in the DVX, it writes a special "click track" that locks the tape to the DVX.

It will however work in any HVX as they also have the clicktrack marker.
