CHEAPEST/BEST External LCD Monitor

Just got back from a 2 day shoot with the Lilliput and the 9800mAh battery. The monitor was wonderful in the package I pictured a few posts back. I never tried any handheld, so it was totally a studio setup. The Lilliput worked gr8 for focus and review of shots (allthough too much live view can heat up the 7D rather quickly). The battery charged overnight and ran the Lilliput all day long. This is a real winner ya'll.

Great to hear mhood! Considering the price and performance of both the Lilliput and battery, I'm sure a lot of guys here will be adding it to their arsenals!

Beware of the Lilliput external battery from coollcd. I bought the Liliiput HDMI (from coollcd.com) for my 7D rig and within 1 minute of hooking it up the external battery literally EXPLODED. Pow! And it was attached to my camera via a screw mount - I had to unscrew my precious camera from while it spewed hot noxious gas. This just happened in the last hour... Anyone else notice the battery overheating or anything?

Hey guys, I've been looking around for a cheap, yet good, external LCD monitor, but haven't had much luck yet. The "SmallHD DP1" seems like a really good deal, but is still out of my price range:

I don't know if I can justify spending $1000 on an external LCD. Does anyone know if there is anything decent for around $250?

Thanks in advance to any replies :)

If its a justification you want, I can't think of a better justification than the Small HD will show you what your filming much better than the little 3" inch LCD on the camera. Anything that helps you to see what your actually capturing the moment you're shooting it is worth $1000. It should be pointed out that the Small HD itself is around $799. The $989 kit comes with 2 batteries (as well as other stuff) and a cool sun shade that will make you look like Spielberg on set. :-)

I've really been enjoying it as I'm testing stuff out. I bought it for video, but now that I have it, I really think its a must have for still photography as well.

I just got a SmallHD

I dont think it is very small !

IMO the picture is good, and the suncreen will be a life saver

It is a massive boost in confidence to know that I can see what I am filming - which is kind of fundamental to shooting- playback is even better

Here is is on my rig..

Since these pics I have built a support system that takes the forces away from the nut - meaning it wont unscrew and fall off

Dammit!! I want the SmallHD!! :(

It definitely seems like a very good quality product!!

One thing I'd like to know is: what type of LCD is it? TN? IPS? PVA?

I'm using a IPS panel right now for my PC, and with it's 178degree viewing angle and true 8bit colour, I'm not sure I could ever go back to TN's 160degree viewing angle and 6bit colour...

I know that when I did a bunch of research for the Ex1 (which i though I was going to get) I too had this same question and like many here didn't want to spend $500-$1000 on a 7"tv (no way i'm paying more for this then my big ass, kick ass plasma!)

So the research pointed me to this,

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DVP-FX93...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1263754363&sr=8-1

Might need an adapter or work out of the box, not sure on the How it connects yet.

That's going to be standard composite... not a really good picture by my prediction...

A 15 or 19'' HDTV with HDMI input is a pretty good solution for larger options... (like $150)

But in the field a 7" HD is really ideal to mount right to the cam and be mobile... That's why I am torn between the Manhattan at $600 and a SmallLDC at $900

No doubt, you always want to go for the best you can afford and those monitors are top tier, if you can afford them!

For $150 to get a 9" portable ready-to-rumble monitor, operates on battery or AC (plus it's a DVD player so you can use it on the plane) something more for the budget Indie film guy

My girlfriend bought a used mini-DVD player for herself for 25$, which ended up breaking down after a couple months. However the IN/OUTs where fine, but the lazer must have died. So instead of having her throwing it out, I removed the bulky disk section and was able to construct an awesome 7" external monitor. It's SD, but has been calibrated accurately and have no problems finding focus, composition, adjusting usual settings etc. All for 25$.

We all hate you.

Just so you know . . .

I second the Lilliput 7" unit: http://www.coollcd.com/619ah-7-inch-tftlcd-vga-monitor-no-touchscreen-hdmi-new_p634.html

It's a really great monitor for the dough.

I ruled out the DP1 based in part on the controls being on the back of the unit. Manhattanlcd has some great options, but the 8.9" units are a little large for onboard use.

.

Wow, cool deal!

I'm confused though. What connectors does it come with? Does it come with a breakout connector that allows for composite and component input?

What input possibilities does that kit come with? Besides, HDMI obviously.

Yes, breakout with all the additional connectors... HDMI built in...

I purchased the liliput here - great deal: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=202565

Nice.

My biggest need for an external monitor as opposed to the T2i's LCD is so that I can:
  1. Articulate the LCD where I need to see it
  2. Be able to look at what's going on outdoors in sunlight

I see it's a 300nit LCD (like most) so I know I'd need a sunshade outdoors.
In efforts of saving money right now, I'm wondering if I should just create a ghetto sunshade for my T2i until I have more saved.

MadHMC, what have your experiences been with this LCD? How has it served you best and are there any situations in which you have not been able to use it?

I'd like to hear from anyone who owns this LCD, really.

It would be a good solution to what you are looking for...

Real studio monitors have features like color correction, focus assist and usually no overscan... I typically can do without them and have had a lot of success with these little guys - for the money you are getting a MUCH better idea of what you are shooting... and very easy to pull focus...

from another thread:
The Ikan SH7 sun hood made for the V7000 just came from B & H, it fits on the 7" Lilliput 619AH and comes with Velcro to secure it to the monitor. Works good.

Thats a deal, just ordered.
