Cheaper "Alternative" to the MoVi set for release in July, the Omnirig.

I saw some posts about the Omnirig, from Bowens Limelite. It is nowhere near as sophisticated as the newly announced MoVi stabilization device, but it look like it wants to play in the same ball park... or at least the same game.

There is also video of Phillip Bloom playing with one at NAB.

If the price is right, it might be a handy little gizmo to have until something like the MoVi comes way down in price. I don't see much in the way of specs, so we'll see.

Interesting. I see a lot of warp stabilization effects in their video, but I also can tell this wasn't a really well-planned shoot or anything like that.

Another one:

Yeah, I am thinking that there is quit a bit of post stabilization required with this rig. I know nada about that! Hmmm.

looks cool...price?

Was the price revealed at NAB? The MOVi is waaaay out of my budget, but this device looks spartan enough to not be expensive. Of course, that doesn't mean it won't be overpriced for what it is...but I'm interested.

The amount of post stabilization in those videos makes me want to slap them across the ****
What is that crap and how the f*ck are they allowed to promote it with videos like that?

Fine if you're manufacturing a shitty stabilizer and standing by it; But this is one of those scenarios with the horses painted to look like zebras.

I think this is worse than Atomos saying they could record from DSLRs. At least it eventually came out they didn't know any better & admitted their mistake.

I really don't know why they ran some smooth cam. Also I don't know why they weren't able to sync the two shot up.

I think the Vine clip is more honest. To me, even when I first saw that clip on my iPhone, I could tell that this isn't as stable as MoVi or Steadicams. Look at the hand off from Bloom to Brown Shirt guy. The camera tilts a few degrees as the hands tilt to pass off the rig.

That there says the rig isn't absorbing all of the motion & keeping the camera steady.

Now to everyone saying the MoVi is too expensive. Yes, it is. But so is most of our gear. The Sachtler Ace is a dirt cheap tripod at under $500, but any average consumer would think that is a crazy price to pay for a tripod.

You can get a Steadicam Pilot for half the cost of a MoVi, but you need to learn how to use the Steadicam & practice like mad. If you can't afford to own a MoVi, the game changing thing about it is that you should be able to rent one for a few hundred per day. I'm guessing you can probably just rent a MoVi the day, or the day before your shoot. And unlike a Steadicam, you don't need to spend months really learning how to make butter smooth shots.

Each is a different tool that has pros & cons.

What's really great here is that these guys finally found a tool for the script they've always wanted to shoot, but never could before such a device came along.

This rig seems to me to be an evolution of the "Fig-Rig". It is not going to be anywhere near as smooth as a steadicam type rig, but it beats hand holding with out anything and gives extra versatility that you can't get with a shoulder mount. I hope it is priced very decent.

that one shows some promise
the one from the OP looks, as David G. Smith said, like a cheap but weird fig-rig

Nope. Not the same game, not in the same ball park. It might want to be, just like I might want to play in the NBA. Ain't hap'nin'.

There's a world of difference between active stabilization via a three axis gimbal like the Movi, and a passive spring-mass system like the device shown. It's not apples-to-oranges, it's more like apples-to-concrete-blocks.

That is not the same thing other than simply how it appears. That is a design that the MoVi is loosely based on.

The MoVi is a great innovation and Tabb (Inventor) is a really good guy who has continued to bring innovation to the aerial (and now ground) industry. The MoVi is definitely not for just anyone to own but for rentals this is going to be great.

Professional Steadicam operators may be threatened just a bit in some casaes but that's how it goes. Technology changes and we keep-up or fall behind.

I think it is the same game (Hand held stabilizer), but I would say it is kinda like the Detroit Tigers in MLB vs. The Bugsplat Arkansas High School Baseball team.

Just when you thought you'd seen the dumbest thing ever (Prometheus) some clown shoots a stabilizer demo with post stabilization! I've been wanting something that is in between a steadicam and a shoulder rig but until I see it in action without the dodgy post work I won't have a clue about whether it would be suitable for my needs. Any idea how much it's gonna cost? It would want to be cheap. Attaching an EVF to the top and a bit of weight should make it more stable.

The title of this thread filled me with such joy and high hopes. Then, twelve seconds into that demo video, I was again slumped over thinking about which account it will be from which I will painfully suck $15k to give to those Movi people.

Note the " " in the title. I think this little gizmo could be handy for certain situations, but it really isn't up to the stabilization capabilities of the MoVi. Sorry.

For those who can afford the MOVi device, more power to ya. I can't, so this gizmo has my interest. Its a shame that the demo video has excessive Warp Stabilizer, as maybe the results would be more acceptable if they re-render it with less or none. I don't kid myself that this will perform on par with the MOVi device, but I think it could be a viable tool.
