cheaper alternative to a french flag?

I was contemplating buying a $800 matte box for my dslr when shooting in sunlight to block the rays coming into my lens when I use the sun as a backlight but since I won't be using it for nd filters i figure this would be a stupid decision considering I only want it for the french flag. Is there a lower budget alternative to preventing lens flare without the use of a mattebox or french flag?

You can set any small flag on a stand as a lenser to keep a bright light source from causing lens flare. That's good for locked off shots. If you're moving the camera, obviously, the flag has to move with the camera. A small piece of black foamcore or blackwrap held by a flexible arm attached to the camera rig can accomplish that.

There are $40 flex-arm flags on eBay; you can get them with a clamp (tripod legs) or a hot-shoe mount.

For a DSLR, get a couple cheap rubber lens hoods in the right size. But because of the smaller sensor in most DSLRs, you'll often want a narrower hood than what was intended for a given lens.

^^^ Awesome! I'm a one man band and having to hold a piece of black foamcore over my lens while shooting would be a pain. This should work perfectly
