Cheap way to monitor color correction

Instead of buying a professional color correction monitor which cost thousands of dollars, what are some cheap ways to go about monitoring color correction or color grading? I'm thinking about using my HDTV for color correction. Will this work fairly okay compare to LCD or LED monitor? If I use the Matrox MX02 Mini to output to my HDTV and use its color calibration utility to calibrate my HDTV, will this work okay?

Well in the world of guerrilla filmmaking, nothing works 100% - but we make do. If you can calibrate it well then it should work "okay". I calibrated an external LCD monitor and it was quite accurate when I compared the image to most of the "properly" calibrated televisions out there. I think calibration is hard to get 100% because most consumer televisions out there aren't well calibrated in the first place so there's only so much you can do to ensure that your film gets viewed the way it should.

So, another word, instead of spending money on the type of monitor, I should also spend money on the type of calibrator, correct? If so, what are some of the good calibrator out there?

Well, there's more to it than just a calibrator. It takes some arcane knowledge, and access to the TV's service menu to make the changes you'll need to make to bring the set in line.

There's some interesting discussions on calibration over on the AVS TV calibration forums, including calibrator equipment. Some people really get into making these calibrations as you can see. Alternatively, you might just want to hire someone to come in and do the calibration for you -- perhaps make a better calibration than you can make, and you don't have to buy the equipment or climb all the learning curves. If you want to go the professional calibrator service direction, you can find calibration pros on the AVS forums as well.

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. However, my goal is to get a basic or decent color correction monitor. I'm not a colorist so I don't need it to be super perfect.
