F35: Cheap recorder / monitor for f35??

Have we looked at it? Not really, since it's still on preorder. But yes, it looks like it would fall somewhere between a Hyperdeck and an Atomos Samurai. Should be effective, in theory.
 
Mitch I'm sure you guys are overloaded as it is keeping up with the 7-inch, but are there ever any discussions at CD to make a smaller recorder? Something like the 502 that can convert to an EVF and also record prores 422. I would certainly pay for a smaller CD recorder over the black magic or ever sound devices but I completely understand this isn't a small request either, I just wonder if there is a market for it, everyone wants smaller and smaller camera gear.

For 422 on the F35 you have a lot of options. A used Atomos Blade could probably be bought now for the same price as the new black magic kit, and plus SSD's are cheaper/gig. Don't get the normal Samurai, the screen is very bad quality.

First gen pix240 can be found kind of cheap too, but without the 240i the screen isn't great on these. You will need a multiplexer to get 12-bit but for 422 the pix works great as well. Also you would have nice XLR inputs and could ditch the IF box.

I didn't go through the monitor at NAB too much but the black magic did have a higher quality screen than the 3 listed above from what I could see. It's the same way that retina computer screen got a lot crisper and sharper from the previous LCD's. Bummer black magic has a habit of 1/2 finishing products and buttons that never do anything..

There are always discussions about a great many possible future products. We do have some thoughts for the future as any company must, but we are also quite busy with all of the continued development on the Odyssey7Q+. So many new things coming. Our eyes are bigger than our bellies.

I never really gave it much thought, but there sure do seem to be a lot of folks who prefer these monitor/recorders in a 5" format.
(Probably because I'm not one of them.)

Well isn't their stuff all shipped in from China? It's hard to trust their gear, on top of supporting yet more Chinese made junk. BM is a hard company to trust for quality and makes me wonder about the Ursa and Mini for the long run. And don't forget about buttons that have ink which wears off!

Yeah, the lack of almost *ANY* features is why I'm considering a Video Devices PIX-E5 as well, even though it is much much more expensive than a BMD VA (but at least the PIX-E5 is handily cheaper than its competitors).

Heart wants PIX-E5, pocketbook says BMD VA.
 
Why an E5 and not an Odyssey? I cant imagine why seeing as how CD has gone out of their way to support the F35. I dont think Ive ever seen a VD representative online, listening how to improve things.
 
The VD guys are active over in their Facebook group. I've got speedy responses there. Which is nice, as know I know they've tested it specifically with an F3 (which is the camera I own).
