Cheap jib/crane instructions?

I've seen a lot of instructions to build your own jib or crane, but the video footage they provide as an example is just horrid. So bad that you're better off not using any of those shots.

Does anyone know of a DIY jib/crane that turns out decently? I know video maker had one made out of aluminum 2x4's but it was very expensive as I needed a heavy duty tripod just to support all that weight.

I'd like to contruct it out of wood maybe 10 feet high.

Thanks!!!

You might want to ask this or, better, do a search first, in the DIY forum. Lots of threads in there about DIY cranes.

Yes - I agree about the videos. These guys have absolutely no sense of how to shoot a video. A 10-year old kid can do a much better job. Really. What they fail to understand is that the visitors are not interested in their jokes or camera movements. They want to see how it is made step by step and how it operates once it is made.

I, after looking at pros and cons of making vs buying, finally decided to go with DVC-500 from Bargain-camera.com. Got the tripod also as the crane with all the weights could easlly go past 30 pounds. They gave me a very good deal. I did look at Kessler (expensive) and many other brands, but finally settled for DVC-500 after talking to the sale lady for almost 2 hrs and exchanging a few e-mails.

Am expecting it on Tuesday. Will let you know how it works out.
