cheap gear

What's the deal with the Tascam DP-004? B&H dubs it a recorder/mixer. The low price and lack of talk about it would certainly mean it's probably a subpar device, but how does cheap gear hold up against recording straight into the camera (regarding quality)? I'm booming an oktava mic right now and having to run a line from camera to boom operator as well as not getting the shockmount to totally silence noise in the oktava (my fault probably) is getting messy.

Basically just seeing if anyone knows anything about the dp-004 and its recording / mixing capabilities. :)
Thanks in advance.

I'm not very familiar with that Tascam, but if you mention what camera you're using (some cameras have much better preamps than others) and what your current shockmount and windscreen on the Oktava is, you'll get some better advice on what investment would give you the most improvement in audio quality.

Could easily turn out that a nicer shockmount will give you more bang for your buck at the moment, and a higher end recorder would be an investment for the future. (Or the opposite could be true, it all depends)

I use the dvx100 with the rycote ball gag windshield and sabra-som shockmount. I only specify the tascam because on b&h it's categorized as a recorder/mixer. sounds like a good deal, unless doing it straight into the dvx is just as good.

it's a 4-track music recorder. no xlr input to boot, which is unfortunate for a music recorder. and it's rather cheap, even for music (its intended use). don't waste your time. it will not benefit you at all for capturing audio for video in any way.
