cheap field recorders

LuckyStudio 13

The Tapeless One
Can we bypass these recorders' internal preamp and use the preamp from an external mixer like the SD Mixpre?

I know that the sound quality of the onboard preamp is probarbly not as good as the pro recorder, but i dont have $1900 to spend on SD 702 recorder.

If I can skip the internal preamp, Maybe I can get a slightly better sound. I am looking to get either the Edirol R9 or the Zoom H4.

thanks

What kind of field recording are you doing? if you are miles from civilization or power, I can't offer much advice. However, if you have decent power available, try looking on ebay for a HDD recorder/mixer, like Zoom, Roland, and Korg. I have had great success with them.

you cant skip on internal preamp as i understand it , it just attenuation in front .
but for dialog , i dont see any problem to make it workable( theh-4)
for the ediro; i dont really know if it by pass the preamp or just attunuate 40 db

I think this might be the ticket, Fostex FR-2LE, Its $200 more than the Zoom H4 but made by a more reputable company and more 'pro'
