Cheap Dolly

Haha

An effective shot at that. I love how D Man and an innocent little league game becomes filmic and movielike.

That's great! BTW - what dolly do you use? And I've wondered how that works when you're filming wildlife, doesn't all that movement scare them away?

..yep i do the same thing alot. i get into the horse stance and flow from one stance to the other shifting weight between legs.. its almost like tai chi using the slow shifting of weight to switch stances and balance. lol combined with arm movement you can get a good 4 to 5 feet of lateral movement. but your thighs will kill you after enough takes.

Here's another cheap dolly trick for indoors, get a tabletop, a towel, and your camera.

Place the unfolded towel on the tabletop, place the camera on the end of the towel and just slowly drag the towel across the table. Instant cheesy pan, but it works pretty well.

Nice. How about making a guide for that towel dolly and selling it. Make sure you patent it.

D!

That was great; I love this artform. A Towel, some Books and Tapes on a desktop and some musical score on top and it truly is a cinematic moment. Those articles easily could have been:

Old Black and White Photographs
A Gun
Medical Tools ala Texas Chainsaw
Explosives
Maps

My point being; how many times do we some Static boring shot of a desktop? You just made something unordinary become very interesting. I loved the tiny turn towards the end.

Okay, I switched out the footage for something more smooth. Here's the secret to the towel method...instead of dragging the towel which I find to be unreliable, fold the towel a few times, and then place the camera on there and cradle the DVX, pushing it around with two hands. This lets you go smoothly in any direction and you can change at will.

This example just shows how much smoother it is, I didn't do any turns for this:
