As expected, Pioneer Electronics, a leading maker of consumer electronics, on Wednesday unveiled its Blu-ray disc read only memory (BD ROM) optical drive for personal computers, which will go on sale next month and will cost $299 in retail.
The first paragraph of the story makes it sound like it can read but not write Blu-Ray disks, but the drive supports 5x and 2x write speeds for single-layer and dual-layer media, respectively.

The full story is here: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/storage/display/20070502232931.html

"The Pioneer BDC-2202 drive can playback, read, record and re-write DVDs . . . . and playback, read and record single- and dual-layer Blu-ray discs (5x for BD-ROM and BD-R/-RE, 2x for BD-R DL/-RE DL)."

That sounds very promising

Wondering which set tops will play back BD-ROM, BD-R/-RE, and BD-R DL/-RE DL.

Me thinks that this will definitely be cool and could be a major battle victory for blu-ray. Even if this drive will not write blu-ray, which seems to not be the case, it just made blu-ray affordable to the masses.

So this does not burn blu ray discs?

taken from the article:

"....as well as playback, read and record single- and dual-layer Blu-ray discs (5x for BD-ROM and BD-R/-RE, 2x for BD-R DL/-RE DL)....."

I just re-read that article, and I could swear that when I first read it, it stated that the drive could WRITE Blu-Ray disks at 5x and 2x speeds, but not it clearly says it read them at those speeds.

I don't know if the article has been updated or I'm just slowly going mad, either is possible. Sorry for the confusion!
