do you guys have any recomendations on cheap speakers for editing audio. Yes, I know I can easily drop 2-3 grand on some good ones, but i'm looking for sub-$300 speakers that would be somewhat acceptable for editing. Thanks
I've been using the Creative MegaWorks 6.1 system. THX certified, full surround-sound including subwoofer (when driven by a surround-sound card, of course). They sound pretty good and were only about $239 I think... can't remember... there was a special for $299 and then a rebate off of that...
I've done some research on the 7.1, and i found that users were saying it cannot play DVD audio since it lacks the hardware capability to do it (ie. decoding dolby digital is very CPU intensive) and it lacks hardware ASIO resampling. The audigy appears to do both, however the audigy seems like a hands-down gaming card, and the revo is crystal clear for audio (DVD, music, etc.). I'm not really sure how important/significant these features are. I never even considered any other sound card other than the audigy until steve mentioned the revo. Anybody?
If you are really serious about editing audio, then you really need to get you some accurate near field monitors. The key with mixing audio is to have an accurate/flat response set of speakers geared specifically for this purpose. I personally use Tannoy but there are many other very good monitors out there.
Great sounding stereo speakers with a big subwoofer, etc. is great for a stereo system or a PA...But for mixing, ask any audio professional - Accurate near field monitors are a must. Much like a good professional field monitor is to video.
BTW: I spent many years engineering audio before I got into video.
I use the Roland MA-8's on my home computer. I've seen them in many other small studios as well, although I do more video than audio stuff, so I don't see much in the way of full audio setups. They have great range for what they cost (less than 100).
I've been using the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 Soundcard+Behringer Truths B2031 speakers combo. They are great!. $300 for a pair of these amplified studio monitors.

Yeah, the JVC is definitely a playback deck. It's perhaps the worst shooting camera I've ever seen.
I almost got the Audiophile card, but passed on it because it didn't have enough inputs.
i had to buy a little dv cam just to use as a prop for a film, but my wife wants one anyway.. i told her it had to be a panasonic.(for the battery+ charger , and i would use it as a deck too.. bwahahahahah)
Hey steve,
I went down to Guitar Center to look at some speakers and they were set on selling me Event speakers instead of the M-Audio's. The guy insisted they were better bang for my buck. Unfortunately i wasnt able to listen to the M-audios, but I got to listen to the Events which sounded decent but lacked preciseness and low-end. They're also cheaper. I've also read the the Behringer Truths are hightly recomended. What do you think?
BTW, Boog, what model Jerker desk is that? I guess the Jerker line has a variety of models... Thanks
