Changing times. Minimal crew 3 Cam ENG shoot

Budget constraints now require us to shoot with minimal crew! This use to be three or at least two cammos and a soundie setup. Now it's considered a 'one man shoot'. My how times have changed. Three mirrorless cams and away you go! :D(y)

I guess the next step is they talk over the phone and AI generates two talking heads from stills.
Please! Don't joke. Kind'a glad I'm pretty well retired. Think I worked through the best years the industry offered. I watched the interview in question and it looked fine. Just no real desire to be a part of it anymore, if it's all heading this way.

Sky News does a fair bit of this loco multicam stuff now. It didn't sound bad, either. Well done to the op.

The reality is there are a lot of really talented, hard-working pros who CAN pull off this type of setup/production. It doesn't mean they should be forced to do so, but that does seem to be the unfortunate reality of some gigs.

I've done plenty of jobs where I overdelivered. In some cases it was worth it monetarily. I may have had some extra hard hours, but was rewarded with additional fees for basically doing more than one job.

However, I'd much rather work a single role for a fair fee.

Similar experiences here, and totally agree with your summing up.

No. There were two ops. One doing the lights, I believe. His phone shot being the whole shoot setup from what I can gather.

So not a 'one man' shoot then :).

You know it is the UK Chancellor - I did wonder about the location. (darfortd on the kent side - maybe Reform won that council) I thought it odd.. but seeing the cones one feels there might be a few government flunkies in tow.

But Yes.. an improtant minister.. this should be the work of a 2/3 equipped team of adults!

Oh, yes MM! I know well who it is, Reeves. I know people at Sky, and have shot for them myself, still do occasionally when they need something from down under, If they don't have a Sky Australia crew free. It was just tongue in cheek, saying look at the scale back these days.

A lot of junior reporters are now self shooters. They do the reporting, the sound and the shooting, including shooting their own PTCs. They then edit the piece and upload it. It's happening all over the world. When I trained with the Beeb a cameraman was just that. If you needed lighting, you had a gaffa, even if it was just for a sun gun. A soundie was just that., sound only. You never dared venture into one another's areas of skill. You'd have BECTU down on you like a ton of bricks. Solid union back then. The thought of a journo mic'ing him or herself and then filming their own PTCs was totally unheard of. Not today.

Yes. At recent news events I've seen a reporter from our local Fox affiliate setup a camcorder and position himself in front of it and record. His camcorder and tripod were prosumer level. The first time I saw him recording I thought he was just some amateur recording the outdoor event until I saw him on the Fox61 evening news.

I would say it's been about 10 solid years of people self-reporting via their mirrorless' or phones from every single part of the world you could imagine and it simply works.

Hundreds of millions of videos (maybe billions now, IDK), some in real time, providing pleasing images, perspectives, info to the brain.

The idea of sending a crew to a non-evergreen shoot in today's world, in which people will watch the video and forget about it the next day, is becoming illogical at this point in life.

I'm an old school cat, I miss the 90s, I get it - especially the longer I live and witness how long it takes people to change (especially the news) - but that could be a significant waste of resources all around (speaking generally, not directly at the above scenario).

It's happening everywhere. I remember years ago with the first British girls to circumnavigate the world were scooped by one reporter with a phone. Dozens of TV crews on the quay waiting for the yacht to arrive. All with live links ready to go. An enterprising young girl reporter hired a local boatman to motor her down the English Channel for a few miles. She filmed, then boarded the incoming round the world yacht and did a live PTC and interview with her phone. The assembled crews waiting for the yacht's arrival were totally oblivious to the fact until their cell phones started to ring with frustrated Chief of Staffs asking how they had missed out on the arrival and interview. They hadn't even sighted the yacht at that point. How did Dylan say it? :)
