changing the Shutter speed -only loop?

Am I right that the only way to change the shutter speed back to where I had it is to loop through all of the speeds?

If Im at 60 and want to go down to 30 or lower for what ever reason, I have to loop through all the speeds to get to 30?
Is there any way to go back or is it always forward?

I remember seeing that in the manual and thought "how stupid is that"
There may be times I need to change the shutter speed during shooting and dont really want to get all the way to 2000 or so just to go down one set.

no theres no way to go to another shutter speed directly unless its set up in synchroscan which takes alot longer. :-/

..but so you have to hit the little button like 6 times? .. exactly how long does that take? :P

Re: changing the Shutter speed -only loop?

Its not how long it takes, its the camera going almost completely dark then light again to get back on step.
Its only a problem if I have to chage shutter speed while Im taping.
And doing wedding videos, thats quite often, well, it was until now. :-/

Re: changing the Shutter speed -only loop?

Just a quick question. Why are you changing shutter speeds while taping. I can see for different scenes maybe you want a different effect, but I can't think of any weddings that I have ever done that required me to change the shutter speed while taping.
Just curious, what kind of situations do you find it better to change shutter speed while taping?

Re: changing the Shutter speed -only loop?

I've done weddings, plays, live events where the lights change on me during the shoot and I need to adjust accordingly.
I've also used a real slow shutter (usually while shooting bands play) to get a nice effect. But that was with my VX2K.

How come you don't just change the aperature. Changing the shutter speed can drastically change the overall asthetic of the shot, changing aperature and using ND filters will not change the asthetic of the shot and will make your adjustments unnoticable, as opposed to changing shutter speed.
I don't know if this helps, maybe you are going for that different asthetic.

The way I look at shutter speed is the way to control the look of the picture rather than the exposure. Coming from a still photograpy background, I found this hard to accept at first, even though with still photography, shutter speed can be used for asthetic as well, just not to the same degree that motion pictures are.

Re: changing the Shutter speed -only loop?

YOu could also look at aperature as an asthetic as well, as it controls your DoF, however for most situations the shot is set up first with aperature and shutterspeed in tandom to compose a shot. Truthfully, I can't think of any way to change the shutter speed without ruining a continuos shot, at least with the DVX.
