Changing ISO on the FS700

As far as i can tell, you can only switch between Low, Medium and High with the switch on the camera. You can set those values in the menu. As far as i know, you can't dial the iso in smaller increments without going in and changing the entire default L,M,H settings?

If so, it's about the ONLY thing i don't like about the camera. I wish you could use the dial on the camera the same way you change shutter speed. I've only taken it out for a couple of tests today, and found myself changing the shutter speed more than the iso just out of convenience. Feels kind of wrong though. Wouldn't you want to change the iso in small increments to fine tune your exposure rather than mess with shutter speed a lot?

Yeah that's one very big inconvenience with both the FS100 & 700, worst idea every Sony.

Damn, i wonder how hard it would be for them to set up an option through firmware to just select ISO, and be able to turn the wheel to change it exactly like Shutter Speed works?

I loved to hear that and I hate that function too.

I'm still waiting for my FS700 pre-order, but this does sound HORRIBLE. Sounds like it's backwards as I changed the ISO constantly and the shutter speed stays mostly at 50 or 60.

There has to be a way to do this quickly isn't there? Can you pre-program a button to quickly scroll through the ISOs?

The only way to speed up it a little, ( on FS-100 and FS-700 ) is to set auto-ISO to minimum .. (in FS-700 its will be ISO 320 in CINE2 and change automatically in other gammas.. ) and than set first around ISO 800-1000, second around ISO 2000-3000, and third around 8000 - 12800 .. or what ever you like.. so you will get 4 presets instead of 3 .. yea.. the way Sony did it is very stupid and don't have any logic behind ... but actually I don't have much problem with it ... as I don't shoot weddings and reportage :) ... on narratives and music videos there is enough time to change the settings.. on FS-100 I use NiCi Fader ND filters for fine tuning .. don't try it on FS-700 yet... but I will try :)

Good idea, setting the auto-ISO to minimum and using "low" as a slightly higher one.

Thank you very much for the tips.

The 3 levels of gain is a traditional Video interface left over from the old days. Every video camera I have ever used has this as the only way to set gain/asa while rolling.

I am not saying this is good. It is just traditional. I am really use to changeing gain as I move around shooting w/o having to look at what I am doing in any menu or find a dial, I think most shooters from the Betacam etc days are used to this. It is also how the EX cams work.

The variable asa is really a new thing that came with DSLRs. In the old film days you had to change film mags to change the speed. Shooters who grew up shooting with DSLRs take this for granted.

All that said it would be great if Sony would update the FW so you could dial in gain as you are rolling, but I would not want to loose the 3 click switch that I am so used to.

I've been using the Canon XF100 and the FS700 and traditional videocams for awhile and the way they do gain is completely ridiculous compared to DSLR's. On the 5dmkIII I just click a button and switch ISO in a second. On the FS700 it takes HOURS (well, feels like it) if those 3 presets don't match. Modern cams are also so sensitive that more finesse is required than those 3 little dingy switches. I don't get the idea.

It's a pain but not the end of the world, it's just a few clicks on the menu between shots to balance the iso, at least you can see the effects of the change immediately as you flip up and down the values.

cheers

man.... compare flicking a switch to changeing mags on a Panaflex as the sun goes down....

yea, it doesn't seem so bad now does it?

DSLR shooters should try to kick it old skool sometime...

Things use to take a longer time back in the day before someone invented a better way. One of the many reasons of why film is dead.

easier? fo sho...
better? ummmmm.....

With a digital camera, i can take a look at the day's pages and with my 1st AC set the ISO choices for the day before leaving the camera truck

Still, spending a few days on a camera truck at the sunset mag swapping rush might not be a bad thing... at the least you would know that you don't NEED infinatly adjustable ISO to make great images...
