Changing Image Quality affects avaialable video recording time

Hi there,

I have just stepped up to the MK3 after many years with a MK2. I shot video as well as RAW stills on the MK2. I have noticed when I change the Image quality from RAW to L or vice versa, it affects my record time whilst shooting video. Is this normal? How is it that changing the quality of still photos affects record time of the video side of things? Does this mean I need to change resolution everytime I swap from stills to video?

Thanks in advance

No its doesn't mean you have to change the resolution. The resolution of video is set in the video menu. 1080p [24] or 720p [50/60] (PAL NTSC) are your choices.

I can't see how this would actually be the case. Run a test with each stills setting (without moving the camera) and see if it really changes the file size of the video. I'd wager that it doesn't as the stills and video functions are completely separate.

Ok so what happens is, I select video over the start stop button, I use a 32Gb card and set the video to 1920 25 (PAL) ALL-1, Image quality is set to RAW. My available frame count is 1067. If I then change Image quality to L, I have like 4042 available frames, which suggests to me an increase in my video quality. Is that the case?

When you change the image quality to L... from Raw.. that means you are no longer shooting RAW pictures, you are shooting Jpegs.. which are smaller in data size hence the increase in available frames. The Canon 5D mark 3 does not shoot RAW video, or motion jpeg... it shoots H264. Changing the image options is purely related to stills...not video.

if you want to shoot RAW video, you have to install magic lantern.. but you are a long way from there so I would concentrate on learning to use your camera first.

have fun!

Thanks for that Scott, I understand the difference between RAW and Jpeg as I shoot my stills as RAW images. But when shooting video and the setting is left on RAW (as I used to do on the Mark II) the remaining frames on the MarkIII (shown in the square brackets) is reduced substantially from over 4000 to 1000. I assume this relates to video as it flashes and reduces as the camera rolls. So does that therefore mean I have less time available for video recording. I know it shouldnt but it seems wierd when sahoting video, my only reference to duarions remaining is that figure in square brackets.

Its not overly clear but its not as straight forward as the Mark II.

The number is an indication of how many photos you can take, not how many frames of video you can capture. The number decreases as you film because that is taking up space on the memory card, leaving it less space for photos. If the camera is set to take RAW photos, you'll have a lower count to start with, but it'll decrease slower when you film. I remember being confused with this at first too!

Thank you mit, thats the answer I was looking for. I didn't think that would make a difference to the quality, just makes it look that way when the number going down is much smaller than on other resolutions. As long as the record time and quality is the same, its all ok.
