Changing color of cigarette smoke

Hi,

It's much appreciated if anyone can help me with this. In a video I will be shooting, the person will be smoking cigarettes, and I want to use After Effects (other suggestions?) to change the color of the smoke he blows out different colors, e.g. pink and lime green, any suggestions on how I would do this. Also, would this be best to shoot in an all white or all black studio, so the colors would stand out.

Thank you if you can help!

Shoot it with a black background. Light the smoke. Bump up the contrast in post prior to applying the color effect; use levels. If the actor is also lit you'll need to frame your shot in a way that easily excludes him from turning pink and such with a garbage matte.

personally, I would not have any smoke in the shot itself, then add it in post. Seems like it would be much easier. But you're going to have to use high quality to get that shot. What camera are you using? If it's HD, shouldn't be a problem. Shoot the scene, no smoke. Add the smoke on a separate layer, key out the BG, use Fill and Hue/Saturation to change the color of it. This way it won't effect the rest of your shot.

But that's just me. I'm anxious to see how Matt, Capt (both), and oneinf would tackle this.
