Changeable Up/Down Voting System/Mechanism

Run&Gun

I’ve seen others on here wish for/ask for this previously, as well, so I’ll start a formal thread on it.

The Up/Down Voting system on DVX needs to let the voter change their vote after voting, at least for a few minutes, in-case of accidentally voting either the wrong way or just unintentionally. It is just so easy to do today when using a mobile device, especially with the vote icons/buttons being so close together and right against the edge of the page. I’ve done it accidentally numerous times just while scrolling, but also voted the wrong way, because the buttons are so close together. I know that on some other commenting and posting systems out there that have a voting system, the vote can be changed by the person that voted, after the fact. Whether this is an option on the software that runs DVX, I don’t know, but if it is, it definitely needs to be allowed.

From the little I've read on the vBulletin forum (the software used on this site), changing votes is not possible. For sure it is not possible for polls per their technical support staff, so it probably isn't possible for posts.

I can count on one hand the number of times I have voted a post. I don’t even observe the up / down votes on posts.

To each their own. But I don’t see the voting serving much purpose. If a purpose is to discourage bad acts / bad actors, it doesn’t appear to me that down-votes have that effect. At times it may even encourage trolling in that the voting lets a provocateur see that they have produced the negative reaction they sought.

I need all downvotes I’ve received changed to upvotes, as I believe they were all the result of misclicks :2vrolijk_08:

Let me clarify, I can delete a vote, then you can re-vote accordingly. I deleted all down votes since late 2017 for you (have to do them one by one...).

The site could take a more positive turn by replacing downvoting with upvoting with name. I have seen this on other sites. Looks like this:

just only start threads in this subforum, where there is no voting option.

Or reveal identities of both up and down votes for a potential reduction in passive aggressive voting.

Often the best thing we can do when things get tense between people (and usually for a rather lame reason) is just bring back to a calm center and model a better response. We collectively set the tone and so the responsibility is collectively on us. I also think charitable readings of members post could be helpful (assume positive intent and intonation unless proven otherwise). Of course there are exceptions to this, and that is where the mods can assist.

Oh, someone just downvoted every post on the last Sigma FP L page. And I got three of them.
