Ces'15

If the mods don't mind, I am opening an all encompassing CES'15 thread (well, all encompassing to the extent that it relates to this forum).

Some of the early news makers are -

High Dynamic Range (HDR) TV's with or without Dolby Vision.

8K TV's (http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20141230PD218.html) because 4K is soooo yesterday.

January, 5th is the day several major video manufacturers will stream their presentations online and those should include some camcorder news.

Sony Alpha Rumors and Action Camera Rumors are reporting that there will be a new 4K action cam from Sony announced tomorrow.

Red Shark News is speculating that there will be several 21:9 (2.33 ratio) monitors shown.

I am sure the details will be out by Monday afternoon.

With the 20.6 MPX sensor, this looks like a 1" type from RX-100, RX-10 and AX-100, with the model being a "consumer" version of the AX-100, currently selling for $1,798.

Some sites have recently bandied about RX-20 (basically RX-10 with 4K), but Sony's probably saving it for CP+.

Let's see what Panasonic and Canon have to match this. JVC has already announced its lineup ($2,495, $2,995 and $4,450, with the top of the line having an s35 sensor)

Canon announced three new point-and-shoots (hah, and you thunk dese wuz ded) and three new HD camcorders (sub-$500).

Typical low-mid consumer stuff so far.

A little bit out of the box - a new electric skateboard.

Why?

Well, the Steadicam operators long used mobile platforms. Garrett Brown himself used a wheel chair on the set of "Shining". Others used Segway scooters. These are, in general, far more stable for shooting than a person running on his own two feet, with or without a 3-Axis stabilizer.

So, a few new products.

And Rocket Skates.

DISH launches industry first with 4K Ultra HD Joey

With the launch of the 4K Joey, DISH is the first pay-TV provider to offer a set-top box that supports all Ultra HD televisions equipped with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. The ultra-thin receiver is small enough to fit behind wall-mounted 4K TVs and features picture-in-picture and native Bluetooth support.

“While 4K Ultra HD televisions have generated considerable buzz in the industry, 4K pay-TV solutions have not been universal,” said Vivek Khemka, DISH senior vice president of product management. “The 4K Joey expands the 4K ecosystem and enables consumers to select the Ultra HD TV of their choice and access relevant content, helping them better enjoy the most advanced picture viewing experience available today.”

The 4K Joey will be available in Q2 2015. It will connect to an existing Hopper and joins the existing “troop” of Joeys in offering a complete whole-home experience. In addition to the standard Joey, DISH offers the Wireless Joey, the Virtual Joey and the Super Joey.

For those with DISH, is this a net streamer or a satellite broadcast 4K channel?

PS. I hope Joey likes gladiator movies.

Samsung outed an NX-500 camera (sort of like NX-300 but with 4K) but then pulled the announcement page ASAP.

In the external storage segment, Samsung has launched a new line of flash drives called the Portable SSD T1. The compact Portable SSD T1 flash drives are as small as a size of a business card and weigh about 30 grams. The three models - 250GB, 500GB and 1TB - are priced between $179 and $599. The company says that the new flash drive series will be available from later this month in the US, Europe, and Asian markets.

The Portable SSD T1 flash drives come with read/ write speeds of up to 450MB per second, to which Samsung claims that it takes only eight seconds to transfer a 3GB movie file and 27 seconds for a 10GB movie file compared to a conventional external HDD which would take 26 seconds and 85 seconds respectively. The drives are powered by Samsung's proprietary 3D Vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology.

USB 3.1 Type-C - promises ~ 10 Gbps/800 MBps sustained transfer speed.

For the demo, the group used two Samsung SSD 840 Evo drives together in a RAID 0 setup. Connected to a computer using a Type-C connection, the benchmark test showed a sustained speed of more than 800MBps for both read and write. Prior to USB 3.1, this type of speed was only available with a Thunderbolt connection.

4K Blu-ray update (based on the same Panasonic mockup), that should be available for Christmas'15.

100Mbps in HEVC is roughly equal to 200Mpbs in H.264, making this a very high delivery bit rate indeed.

The prototype player supports additional standards such as the HEVC codec and High Dynamic Range which Panasonic expects to see in the next Blu-ray Disc standards ... The 3,840x2,160-pixel-resolution player is also capable of reproducing the wide color gamut standard known as Rec.2020 and a very high bit rate of 100Mbps. Current Blu-rays are only capable of a maximum bit rate of 40Mbps.
