CES 2019: ‘8K Is Getting Real’

Or we could just go out into the World and look at stuff with our own eyes... You know, before Skynet takes over and our AI equipped TV's enslave us and destroy the planet.

Real and present danger. Those damn Boston Dynamics Robotics videos are freaking me the hell out!

Not to worry, they were sold to Google/Alphabet then sold off to Japan (maybe we'll see an upgraded Aibo? With real (fake) fur this time).

All 2019 8K TVs come with a free robot dog! (puts this post back on topic)

Yeah, but this. They're coming. Be afraid. Be very afraid. Now that they are this mobile, agile and fast, humans just become a big, slow moving, bag of water and bones, easy prey.
The Zeroth law of robotics will be out the window quickly I predict.

It's getting closer and closer...

How many other species practice 'self-extermination'?

Like it or not, here comes 8K

Here's a rundown of the 8K sets announced at CES and scheduled to go on sale this year:

LG: Five 8K models are coming from LG in the second half of 2019, with pricing likely coming in June: the OLED 88-inch Z9 OLED, and four LCD-based NanoCell models — SM80, SM85, SM90 and SM95. All five LG 8K sets will be imbued with the company's ThinQ smart home platform and Google Assistant, DolbyVision HDR and LG's next-gen Alpha 9 processor designed to enhance up-conversion.

Samsung: First to market with 8K last fall, Samsung has already started pre-sales on four new QLED 8K models, all equipped with HDR10+, adaptive brightness and sound technologies, as well as Apple AirPlay 2 and iTunes support: a 65-inch ($4,999), 75-inch ($6,999), 82-inch ($9,999) and 85-inch ($14,999). Samsung also displayed a 98-inch QLED model, but with no word on when or how much.

Sony: The company silently debuted 85- and 98-inch versions of its XBR Master Series Z9G 8K Android TV LCD models. While both sets are already listed on the company's web site, there is no word on when or how much.

TCL: As its CES press event, TCL announced two models — a 75-inch Roku-enabled 8-Series set equipped with QLED and quantum contrast technologies and a Roku hardware reference design that TCL is the first to license, as well as the Q10 QLED Android TV. Only the Roku 8K model is scheduled to be sold in the U.S., however, but in what potential additional sizes, when and at what price TCL hasn't said.

It's getting closer and closer...

Do the business analysis- building robots is expensive, if they break, can they fix themselves (heal) and can they auto-reproduce (ask yourself why did Google/Alphabet dump Boston Dynamics)?

Or is there a ready supply of self-healing auto-reproducing robots which simply need to be programmed? Using a relatively low-cost easy & cheap to manufacture mass-programming robot?

Cheap 8K programming units are the next step in the evolution.

As content creators, we can shape the future by creating and watching healthy programming and not doing the opposite. A resurgence of the Golden Age of comedy would be nice right about now, wouldn't it? https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2018/04/20/75-best-movie-comedies-80-s/534907002/ :)

New Samsung Exynos chipset supports 8K video

Samsung announced its Exynos 9820 chipset, which will likely power the company's 2019 flagship smartphones, including the Galaxy S10, late last year. Now Samsung has unveiled additional detail on the new processor in a press release.

Of course, it's the new chipset's imaging capabilities of interest and on paper it looks like the Exynos 9820 won't disappoint. It will be able to manage up to five camera modules. It's already known at least one version of the Galaxy S10 will likely come with a triple-camera on the back. This leaves enough processing power for a front dual-camera as well.

In addition devices equipped with the chipset will be able to record 8K video using a 10-bit HEVC codec. This doesn't necessarily mean such high-res video will be standard on the Galaxy S10 at launch, but it's good to know any Exynos 9820-equipped devices will be future-proof in terms of video and an 8K mode could possibly be activated via firmware update.

The Exynos 9820 is also built to transform those special moments into spectacular videos. As recording a video in high-resolution can occupy a large space within a limited storage capacity, a processor must compress the video with a video codec in order to store and transfer it efficiently. The advanced Multi-Format Codec (MFC) in the Exynos 9820 processor can encode and compress 8K video into a smaller file size thanks to its 10-bit HEVC codec, which delivers highly efficient video compression with 10-bit color support. This means users need not worry about running out of storage space – even when recording videos in high resolution. Furthermore, the 10-bit HEVC codec can generate 1,024 different tones for each primary color, which translates into 1.07 billion color combinations.

The advanced display subsystem is built to present high quality multimedia content on an HDR display. The HDR display reproduces lifelike colors with a high level of accuracy. Notably, the Exynos 9820 supports HDR10+, a new open standard for HDR video which employs dynamic tone mapping allowing scenes to be optimized individually. With this powerful display subsystem, the Exynos 9820 can support a 4K UHD display on a mobile device, offering mesmerizing multimedia experiences.

Amazing

So, Samsung phones will soon offer 4k 60fps video in 10-bit HEVC format, and Sony is still not willing to give us internal 10-bit on the a6xxx/a7/a9 series (I won't even bother to complain about Canon anymore).

Protectionism at it's finest in both brands. Both make so many video cameras above these respective models, they are never going to make these lower end models state of the art because nobody would buy their more expensive offerings.
They'll always cripple them somehow. That's why companies like Fuji and Nikon are making more exciting offerings, no models above to protect.

I think they were referring more to playback than capture. I would imagine you would need a larger sensor in those smartphones to pull off 8k recording.

Maybe 8k video will make its way into phones soon, or maybe not, in any case I don't really care about 8k (I didn't mention it). What strikes me is that very soon phones are going to be recording 10-bit video internally.

HA! You're right. I read 8K into what you were saying in place of 4K. Apologies.

According to Samsung the new module offers sequential read speeds of up to 1000Mbps and write speeds of 260Mbps, enough for the continuous recording of high-speed video at 960fps. In terms of both storage capacity and transfer speeds the new module should also make an interesting combination with Samsung's new 8K-capable Exynos chipset.
