Century Optics 1.6X or 2X for Surgery

Hi Gang,

I am new here. I quickly searched the forum, but decided to ask... I am shooting open neck surgery from a small crane early next month with my DVX100B. I need very clean close-ups and will need either the Century Optics 1.6x or 2x teleconverter. I will be about 6-8+ feet back and about 8+ feet up in the air with the camera. Does anyone know if these lenses allow tight zooms at this distance to remain in focus and stay crisp enough to focus on an area perhaps the size of a quarter? Any info would be greatly appreciated, as I have to buy the lens tomorrow.

Thanks!

Lou

Lou,
You're not going to get anywhere near the size of a quarter with an effective 20x zoom... not to mention the vibration at the long end of a lens on a crane.
Before you buy the teleconverter, set your camera up 4 feet from an object the size of your target (8 feet with a 20x, approx. 4 feet with the camera's 10x zoom) and see if the field of view works for you.
Hope this helps.

I can't speak to surgical uses, but I own and use a Century 1.6x that does a fantastic job of close-up work on a tripod. A crane, however is a dicey proposition with a telephoto extender. You might consider putting the camera on a fully raised tripod and then focusing in. I am sure that if your distance is >10 feet you will get as close as you need to.
