Centre Spot filter ?

I know there was a thread on this but I can't seem to find it .
I went to the local camera shop to purchase a center spot filter for filming the moon .
I was asked what I needed it for and I told him . You don't use that filter he says , that's not what it was made for . Who told you this ...I replied it was posted in the DVXUSER site . This is what is recommended for capturing the surrounding clouds as the moon is bright and they don't show up. No , wrong filter , not sure what you would use he says but this is not it .

OK maybe I'm wrong but I'm sure this is the correct filter . Am I correct or am I way off on this ..Ian

My memory, which isnt what it used to be, says that in the still camera world a center spot filter is an effects filter with a clear center and then some sort of effect (multiple image, soft image, etc) surrounding it so the resulting image has a normal middle surrounded by the effect.

It sounds like you want a filter with a neutral density "spot" in the middle to reduce the brightness of the moon to bring out detail in other things like the clouds etc. There are special attenuator filters made for wide angle , large format camera lenses to combat the significant fall off in illumination as you go to the edge, whether or not something like this might help I have no idea. I would recommend contacting a store that sell large format equipment (8x10 etc) and talk to them.

Thanks Bill
I believe you are right about the Nd "spot" in the middle . The only other solution is to try and film in the early morning and play with it in post .
