FS7: center crop vs 4K crop in post

did anybody compare already center crop vs 4K crop in post?
Is there a visual significant difference?

If you want to modify forcibly the FS7 to a B4 ENG camera it might be important to shoot smaller 2K files instead of 4K

But for all others: why was this request so strong?

HFR in 2K Centre is much cleaner for HFR and it acts as a digital zoom in normal shooting which are the main strong points for me and the latter will reduce the need for lens changes.

As you say you could shoot 4K and crop in but that's a lot of wasted data especially if you're shooting actuality, 4k has a habit of filling up the card very quickly. I bet there were a lot of F5/F55 with some decent S16 zooms on the shelf that requested this and now we benefit. I might start looking myself but I suspect a really good S16 zoom would be more than I wanted to pay right now.

I did this comparison a couple of years ago with my F55.

I use Center Crop all the time for wildlife. It turns my Canon 200-400 f/4 (with a built in 1.4x extender) into a 200-1120mm without ever changing lenses.

I was looking for s16 zoom in my area and there is literally NOTHING. Could not find a single one in the whole country. I'm searching incorrectly or industry has truly moved on.

So in comparison center vs full frame HFR is cleaner?

I don't think the industry has moved on, far from it, but the lenses have become incredibly sought after.

Centre vs Full frame HFR is night and day cleaner.

Nirv,

I'm getting exactly the opposite result. When I put the camera into 180p, the full scan option is sharper and has less noise in the shadows than the center crop. I'm attaching stills that I took this morning. These are zoomed 400% to focus on the shadow area.

Christopher,

I've not extensively tested HFR but I have noticed moire and a bit of strangeness around specular highlights in Centre Crop mode. I've seen noise in the darks but I assumed I was under exposed slightly and may have been at 2000 ISO.

I've had both good and bad results with the previous method of HFR and been very scene dependent. Organic subjects like crashing waves look ace while anything man made with horizontal lines has looked poor.

At least now there's a choice and one can choose the most appropriate method for the shot if you can work with the crop.

I just want center crop for the occasional punch in, like when filming surfing. But for most things, it's Super 35mm as I far prefer the look of it over a 2x cropped FOV - Shallower DOF and different aesthetics.
