CC'n a Grab - Oh what fun

Hopefully these grabs will show up. I just wanted everyone to feast their eyes on my handsome self. This is my first time posting any grabs on this board. Be gentle.

Got my camera less than two moths ago, been mostly playing with levels and changing various values in post.

Here are some of the looks I'm trying to perfect, as I will apply many of them to my short films in the future.

Feel free to do your own take on the original. I'm curious as to what sorts of things one can do with it.

Everything was shot at about zero. Except MP at -15. Cine_D. CC in Vegas 7.
The last two of the shots utilize the VASST plugin, and then I went even further with it so it will stand out more (I use it as a guide. The effect can stil be achieved w/o it). Film grain added. Contrast boosted.

1000 watt worklight pointed at left side of my face. Shadow on right side used with "Your Mummy is Hot" Halloween T-shirt bought for $1.32 @ Target.

UNCORRECTED:

Look1: I tried to make it look "normal". Meh. I really want to master the normal look.

Look2: WAY too red imo. This was my first attempt at "normal". I failed.

Look3: Matrix much? Still, maybe too green.

Look4: I really like this one. Just messed around with Color balance/curves.

Look5: My fave. I love high contrast b/w. CC'n is such a pain in the a$$ that I MIGHT just convert to this for all my projects.

Look6: Gritty brownish look. Used Ole Red preset...boost conrast, slightly desaturate, yadd yadda yadda.

Look7: WWII preset. Desaturate alot afterwards for more effect. Boost contrast, luminence, brightness.

Anyone else wanna take a stab at it? Can you show me how to get a Normalish look here? Are you man enough?

These are all great CC examples. I do fear though that you might be losing detail in the blacks by shooting with -15 on the Master Pedestal. Yes, I realize that Cine-D does provide a little bit of Gain but still, -15 for Master Ped is a little too crushed for my taste. I wouldn't recommend going below -7. Others here might feel differently but I worry about losing details in the low end of the range. You are on the right track, I just recommend raising the Master Ped a bit from -15 to -7. For night shots, I leave it stock.

Those cc pics were done well, my two favorite ones would be number 4 and 6. Both of those really look like you put alot of time in them.

Agreed. You can always crush your blacks in post... but if you do it in camera, they're gone for good.

Grabs look pretty good. I like the variety.

honestly bro, not to be a jerk, but i dont like any of those. You're original shot is far too "enhanced" in camera to get something desireable in the end.

dont shoot soo crushed, let your camera record the detail, and if you want in post, then play around with it.

Thanks for your input everyone. :)

I usually tend to shoot with Master Ped at -6.

I just wanted to see how the image looked if I went to the extreme.

I tend to crush in camera because I don't know how to "crush" in post. Still workin' on trying to figure out how to do that . :badputer:

What are you editing on?

I used to be a fan of keeping the master ped around -3, but now I prefer to go considerably lower. Like -7 to -10, even -15 in some scenes when using a 35mm adapter.

At least in FCP, when you lower the blacks you then need to boost the mids or your footage looks underexposed. This adds a bit of grain and posterization. If you can control your highlights, crushing blacks in camera and overexposing a bit leads to a much cleaner image.

Crushing blacks just measn adding contrast, whether that be curves, brightness cortrast, or levels.

Did I say anything contrary to that information?

I wasn't responding to you; I was responding to the original poster who said they don't know how to "crush" in post.
