CCing gray to white in color mask

Hi

When I CC a shot, raising the exposure highlights, a window and a bit of a distant wall beside it rise above legal (100). I put a color mask on it and now that bit of wall is gray, its original color in the shot.

Is there anything I can do to color it closer to the rest of that wall, in other words, whiter? For instance, is there a doable combination of colors on the screen that combine to be white? I can get yellow or shades of violet but nothing close to white. ANd I'm not talking bright white.

I tried a regular mask hoping the gradations outside the mask might be less bothersome, at least to this editor, but it was still kinda odd. I also don't see how to try mask and color mask together. Is there a necessary order? Create mask first, then color mask?

2) I could put a copy of the clip on it, crop it and maybe feather it if that's possible. It's' something I haven't tried yet.

Any tips or ideas would be appreciated.

RGB is an additive color space. So, if R=G=B=256, you get white. As you decrease from 256, it becomes increasingly gray, until when you hit zero, you have black.

Most NLEs have a way for your to sample a given location and find it's RGB values. Swap that in for the area you want changed, and you get a "perfect" match. Except, or course, you won't. Because no real scene is just a block of a single color. And that's why we have feathering, blend modes, etc. so you can blend your changes in with few visual artifacts.

Thanks for the reply! Your info is much appreciated.

Yeah, I'm kinda surprised FCPX doesn't have some way to sample a color. Or at least I haven't found it.

Maybe the boys at Apple forums have a way to do it.

Thx again!
