I dont know if you guys will remember, but a while back a fellow anounced in the screen grabs section that he would send out the first 15 minutes of his movie Cavite for critique. I took him up on it and was blown away....very good stuff, shot in the Phillipines by him and good buddy Ian (the fellows name was Neill Dela Llana). Well, I've been keeping tabs on it, waiting for a DVD release so I can finish the movie, and I'll be danged if it hasnt gone on to screen in several fests, often winning awards, including the Special Jury Award (which Neil says is a fancy name for runner up) at SXSW, played Rotterdam, and is now under the wing of none other than John Spike Mike Slackers and Dikes Pierson! Check it out!!!

I am quite impressed. The filmmakers seem to be awesome, humble guys, and their work is so friggin outstanding it would have just been a shame for them to not get recognition.

Well it seems to be doing very well.

LVHIFF Golden Maile Nominated Feature
Adam, an American citizen visiting his home country of the Philippines, gets an anonymous phone call claiming that his mother and sister have been kidnapped. The caller, who turns out to be the leader of a local Muslim terrorist group, threatens to kill them if he doesn't comply with his demand: bomb a church. The Hollywood Reporter called "Cavite," "guerilla filmmaking at its finest," and indie film guru John Pierson liked it so much, he assigned his UT Austin producing class the task of finding distribution for it. Pic won Best Narrative Feature at the Woodstock Film Fest, and Special Jury Prizes at SXSW and SF Int'l Asian Am Film Fest"

I can't wait to see it.

Wow, I had no idea this film was shot on the DVX! I already bought tickets to watch it at the Hawaiian International Film Festival because it was nominated for the Golden Maile Award (the highest award a feature can get) and because it was about the Phillipines (I'm not Filipino myself but I grew up in a predominately Filipino neighborhood). Knowing now this was shot on the DVX whets my appetite even more!

For those of you still interested in this film, the link to their website is www.cavitemovie.com

I might also want to announce that it's official -- Cavite won the prestigious Golden Maile Award on HIFF's 25th anniversary. Being a Filipino-American filmmaker myself, I have to say, I was very proud to see a film like that made. It was certainly daring, given its sociopolitical stance, and action-packed. In my opinion, well-deserving of the accolades it has received.

I actually got to talk to Ian Gamazon, and like Daniel Runyon said above, he's a very cool guy. So don't worry, Cavite got its much-deserved recognition at HIFF. I hope it does well in the rest of its festival run (though I heard rumors that HIFF was their last stop).

Oh well. There's always DVD. For what it's worth, I really liked it, and am anxiously waiting for its release.

Saw a mention of it the other day in this article about Cuban's new distribution service
(fascinating concept by the way which is relevant to any filmmaker's here)

"The first taker for Truly Indie is Cavite, Ian Gamazon and Neill Dela Llana's film about an American in the Philippines whose sister and mother have been kidnapped. Famed indie producer John Pierson, who had a hand in the success of both Slacker and Clerks, involved his advanced producing class at the University of Texas in selling the project."

I thought I was going crazy because twice now I could have sworn that I saw John Pierson at a coffee shop I always go to...I guess it was him, I didn't realize he was teaching at the University of Texas.
Small world.
