F3: Catalyst Browse with SxS XDCAM

I just got a used but powerful IMAC running OS 10.9.5.
The entire hard drive is just a clone of the hard drive I used on my laptop and I was used to importing XDCAM footage from SxS cards shot on EX-1 or F3 with Sony Content Browser handling the rewrap to MOV files for FCP7. I just tried it on the IMAC though and Content Browser crashed repeatedly before even opening.
So first question is - why? I've also had some problems crashing during or after renders in FCP 7 so perhaps its related - to be honest I haven't trashed preferences yet or repaired permissions so I ought to do that soon.

However I do have Catalyst Browse which opens the SxS card fine. My question is do I use the transcode feature to rewrap the files into useable MOV files or is that going down a generation? Is that the same thing Content Browser did?

Finally discovered that the Content Browser problem just needed to have the serial reinstalled and I couldn't connect to Sony due to my having Little Snitch installed. My mistake.

Transcoding to .mov is a solution for FCP 7 that can't read the XDCAM files in their native structure. You should be able to do transcodes with Catalyst Browse. If it's XDCAM footage, the transcode shouldn't be a generation (no re-encode), just a rewrap into a .mov container. XAVC footage to FCP7 might be a different story.

I just tried using Catalyst Browse to rewrapping the XDCAM files to MOVs . I had to use the "transcode to XDCAM" function and they came in as .mxf files which FCP7 cannot read.
So what's going on ? Can Browse not create XDCAM MOV files?

How can we tell if Browse is really just rewrapping the F3 files into MOV as opposed to re-encoding? I'm curious because I have a ton of old F3 files I wanted to convert to ProRes, or some other file format I can read better in CS6 or Davinci Resolve.

Thanks guys,

Well I think Leni is talking about re-encoding to ProRes MOV because when I launch Catalyst Browse, I can't see any way at all to just "re wrap" with MOV.

Maybe I misunderstood what he meant.

I did mean re-wrap onto MOV's, and I agree I don't think Browse can do it, despite Viddovation's assurance. That's why I was trying to get Content Browser to work.
Catalyst Browse can transcode to ProRes from XDCAM though.

Dennis - don't quote me on this - but perhaps FCP X.... initially it required plug-in from Sony... but now upon ingest / import it re-wraps into .mov files

I've downloaded and trialled EditReady divergent media which seems to work well both rewrapping and transcoding BPAV folder files. You can even add LUTs but I'm not sure how helpful that would be at the ingesting stage.

I'm still on Mountain Lion but planning to upgrade. Though not supported any more by Apple I've heard that FCP7 will run fine on Mavericks but the plug ins won't run (Eureka, CGM, and more). What's your experience, Lenny?

FCP7 seems to be working fine on Yosemite and definitely worked on Mavericks although with any upgrade you may find some plug ins that won't or need to be upgraded or you run in circles for a while. I've definitely been having my issues but they seem to be sorting out fine. Sony "Content Browser" and "XDCAM Transfer" will both rewrap XDCAM from BPAV folders under Yosemite. Content Browser will not handle XDROOT Folders from an FS7 and that's how the FS7 seems to record XDCAM ( aka MPEG 422). However XDCAM Transfer will open the XDROOT folder so all is not lost. Catalyst Browse won't rewrap XDCAM to MOV's - only transcode to ProRes. That's what I've discovered so far. I don't know if Sony is still distributing Content Browser or XDCAM Transfer.
