cases for your lights

What kind of durable cases you guys use to store/transport awkwardly shaped lights - such as an HMI with lenses, ballast, header cable?

I found this company that does custom cases:

We just build custom racks in our grip trucks for HMIs, ballasts and the like.

For larger lights like HMIs with heavy ballasts I secure them to a roll around cart which is then ratcheted down in my Sprinter van for transport.

Or, as an alternative, you could look into custom case makers for music equipment. They have a lot of experience making strong customized cases built to withstand touring.

Yep - if you want flight-case style cases, there are dozens - maybe scores - of guys building them in mom & pop shops. The musician market is just so big.

Do an ebay search for thing like "Marshall cabinet flight case" and most vendors will have an "email us measurements for custom cases" line.

I really try to use a lot of soft cases for one- or two-man gig scenarios. They're easier to pack and transport IMHO.

I get all of my cases from Olympic Case in Tampa. They are one of the best case makers out there right now. There is also R&R Case and they are very good as well. Both of them do custom cases and Olympic also will do custom foam for Pelicans.

Kata's OC-97 is a phenomenal case for one man crews. Its got wheels and will fit in the trunk of most compact cars. You can fit 6 heads and 6 stands if you pack well, along with various grip equipment. I use it all the time. It's not sturdy enough for repeated flying, but it's also lighter than hard cases.
