Traveling on a plane with a mattebox is not a good idea. Especially if you are using one that attaches to your threads as apposed to you using rails because it can be easily ripped off. This mistake can be costly. I'd recomend getting a bag for traveling on plane that fits the stock camera.

Do you have to travel with the mattebox on? Why not just remove it while in flight and put it back on when on the ground. Why risk the breakage or worry about it being legal size? If for convenience, then well your $$$. But why risk it? Travelling to your next shoot and finding your lens thread all busted and mattebox all twisted, ain't worth dick.

I guess I can travel with the mattebox off. But after taking so long to get the rails lined up so there wouldn't be any vignetting I really don't want to take the rails off that's for sure.
Ok, How about a bag that can hold the camera with the rails on and room to tuck the mattebox in the bag somewhere but not mounted on the rails?
I'm headed back to Montana next Saturday but need to fly to make the most of it.
I thought about shipping FedEx but by the time I ship and ship back home, I can have a decent portion of a bag paid for already.
I thought I'd take the camera and my 17" Powerbook on board and either check or ship my other gear.

How far do the rails extend past the front of the camera? I carried my HVX and Powerbook in a KATA HB207 to Italy and back and was able to get it on all four flights as a carry-on, but in the smaller planes I took the camera out of the bag and set it at my feet so the bag would compress a little more. I'm sure you'll need a different bag to fit the rails, but the Kata is great for a laptop/camera combo-

Joe,
Right now I have the rails about even to the edge of where the regular lens shade ends. So it's deeper than normal due to the rails but not really any longer.
I have a Pelican 1600 for a hard case, but I want to carry the camera on board.
United gives specs of 22 X 14 X 9 for carry on bags.
I'm flying out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Bozeman, Montana which are both small airports so I'm sure I'll be on a regional jet and not one of their bigger ones.
I like the idea of being able to carry the laptop in the same bag but I'm not sure if there's room for the hard drives as well. I have a few LaCie 250 gig drives that I use to dump to when the laptop HD fills up.

Well now you're just getting greedy. ;-) Those regional jets barely have enough room for a ladies handbag overhead (not that I've tried this...) I bought a leather doctor's bag while in Italy that actually is a pretty cool way to carry the camera around discreetly. I'm pretty sure I could fit a couple of hard drives in there too, with some foam in between that and the camera, but then I give up the protection of a real bag. A bit of a risk, yes, but if you give up some padding you can get more gear on board with you. And it fits under the seat in front of me without a problem. Wonder if you could get away with that and a laptop bag for the overhead?
I do not think the Kata will work if the camera is significantly deeper as a result of the 35mm adapter rails. The handle of the camera already pushes against the back panel of the bag as it is.

Well, I figure if I can stay a little under the max requirements, I should be ok.
I was at the airport the other day and was surprised at how big some of the carry ons were that I saw coming off the planes. These were Chicago to Cedar Rapids and Dallas to Cedar Rapids. So, I'm hoping to find something that will work yet offer a little protection when I have it out in the field.
