carry on bag for hvx... Please help

The Kata HB 207 isn't carry on legal for airlines like United and Northwest which list 22" x 14" x 9" as max carry on dimensions.

The HB 207 is 15.3 x 11.8 x 25.2

.

True Kevin, but over 50% of the bags I see carried on in the US are not within those dimensions, including my pilot bag for clothes that I have carried on 50 plus times with no issues. The kata bag fits easily in the overhead (on a regional hop from Boston to NY recently) and doesn't raise red flags, but it is worth noting though for those that might be concerned.

bosindy,

I totally agree. I've seen people bring stuff on board that didn't stand a chance of fitting but they try and cram it in any way they can.

I think the key is to be relaxed, laid back and try not to draw attention to your bag.

I'd certainly try to carry on a bigger bag if I knew I could get it to fit in a regional jet overhead.

My fear is that it will be gate checked and I'll have to carry on the HVX without a bag at all.

Since I'm a bigger guy I usually lead into the plane with my right arm behind me carrying my bag so the flight crew doesn't really get a chance to size up the gear even if it is carry on legal.

I also try to board early in order to get a bin that's empty to get everything situated.

Be careful with carrying oversized luggage in the cabin. It works most of the time but you will be really stuck if it doesn't.

This bag is nice, but they seem to be on back order everywhere. I was thinking of making my own (for my DVX) using a my hydrapak and this insert from pelican:

Has anyone done this? Making there own camera bag, without spending $200 on one. Im not totally cheap but I have already a huge collection of backpacks and not really looking for a new one just yet.

Also I wonder if this is a smart idea since I do go downhill moutain biking and plan to do a lot shooting once the weather gets nicer in nyc.
opinion please...

i have the ty as well, but i'm about to get a kata 207, the ty is just so uncomfy and flimsy feeling compared to the kata bags.

I have loaded a bag with the Pelican, and I think its great. Especially, since Im not using a bag or a name brand that most know as a camera bag maker. I built this recently for a shoot I had at work wanted a way to carry my camera, and prepping for my shoots I plan to do over the spring and summer. I can also fit a 15" laptop in there too, besides room for a dslr on the side and this bag is super padded and has plenty of straps.

Nice setup.

Thanks, I was tempted in buying the TY bag, but couldnt find it and the other bags I seen were like $150 or more. I figure I'll just make one out of the many bags I have and this one fit the bill.

no, i brought those from B&H made by Pelican case inserts for about $50. It fit perfectly, and I place the dividers as I wanted.
