Carl Zeiss CP.2 21mm F2.9 or 28mm 2.1 lens?

Hi all. I currently have a Carl Zeiss CP.2 50mm and 85mm and desperately need something on the wide end for my F3. I have a Tokina 11-16mm with an MFT adaptor, but just don't enjoy using it. I am looking into getting a CP.2 21mm F2.9 or a 28mm F2.1. What would you go for? The extra width but slight slower lens, or the 28mm 2.1? Anyone out there using either for a wide?
Thanks, Sparky.

What don't you enjoy about the Tokina? Is it too wide or do you just not like using an SLR lens?

The only advice I can share is that I had a Zeiss ZF 21mm f2.8 Pretty much the same lens as a CP.2. I got rid of it because my Nikkor 17-35mm f2.8 zoom blew it away as far as sharpness and it was a half stop faster - also matched my other ZF lenses color better. To make sure I just didn't have a bad zeiss I compared it to 2 of them. The nikon zoom is terrific.

I would ask the same question... What is it you don't like about the 11-16mm? I like mine so much I ordered the Duclos version.
I'll make it real easy between the 21mm and 28mm, get both!

I just find not knowing exactly what F stop you are on with the Tokina is annoying and physically handling the Cp.2 lenses are so much superior to it. I love the look and feel of the CP.2 lenses. I have a set of Nikon AIS lenses to cover quite a range but have always perferred the image produced by the CP.2's since I invested in them. Not having to change the mount is handy too. Thanks for your input!

If your CP.2 lenses have a PL mount and you need something wider than the 21mm, consider the Duclos version of the Tokina 11-16mm. It is re-housed, has a PL mount, and a full manual iris. I rented it a while back and liked it so much I bought the Tokina to use while waiting for my Duclos version. It's been a while now as Duclos had a setback as someone burglarized their shop stealing many of their lenses. Mine arrives via FedEx today and I can tell you I'm as giddy as a school boy getting nookie for the first time! Too bad your not closer, I'd let you borrow it to test it out.

At any rate, good luck shopping for a wide!

Dave

Get the ProLock adapter and never look back or ask your self what f-stop is on my Tokina (or any other G) lens. I did the same...

Thanks for this. I'll look into this Duclos verion as an option, sounds good. I have just seen it priced at $3,495 - would this be right? on http://ducloslenses.com/Duclos_Lenses/PL116.html . Does this have exactly the same optics as the Tokina 11-16mm but just in different housing? The one advantage to sticking/ adding to my range of CP.2 is I can use my Chrosziel follow focus unit on them all.

You can use your follow focus on the Duclos 11-16 as well.

Think of the Duclos version as to the Tokina, like the CP.2 version as to the ZF.
They are the same optics, but with improved mechanics for cine work.

Hi David, that looks great! Would you mind please asking me how much you paid for it please? Silly question I know but I presume you can only get it from Duclos? Cheers, Sparky

It was $3515 US funds with shipping.
You can find a few up for sale, but they command even more than retail since there is a wait time to get one.
You might be able to rent one locally to try before you buy.

I already have a Tokina 11-16mm. Can I send in my one to be converted or does it not work this way? Thanks. Sparky

David

I find focusing with it a little random at times. Often shots that looked in focus on my monitor have come out looking soft. Have you ever had this issue? I don't have this problem with any other lens? Cheers.

No, never had that issue. But back focus issues with a lens adapter, if they are slightly out of adjustment, useually show up when using wide lenses.

you can send them the lens you have and the will convert it for you

Changed my mind about the Tokna 11-16mm - now love it! It's so wide in fact I have to zoom in a little to avoid my Chrosziel matte box coming into the shot! Very happy F3 user at the moment...Sparky!
