Card reader corrupts files

Hi all.
My computer / USB card reader is permanantly corrupting files during failed card transfers.
Windows says "cannot find the path specified" and says "try again" or "skip file".
It happens a lot. Anybody come across this? help.

I did. Initially I thought it was a dead reader, but it turned out the computer's motherboard was creating these issues. Try another reader in that computer, try that reader on a different computer. In each case, check the original and copied files for bit errors (on windows, it can be done on the console, with the fc command).

Thanks Samuel H.
It happens with multiple readers and different cameras.
I honestly don't remember if it happened on the old Win XP computer (using Win 7 now).
I can try it though.
Did you have to swap the whole motherboard out?
I will look into fc command - I think you mean filecheck.
This makes me nervous.

Yes, I had to change the motherboard. As it turns out, this was just one symptom of a wider problem: the MB was corrupting data all around, not only out of the USB port. My life is much better without that MB, data corruption is a *****. And yes, I mean fc, just open a command window and type fc /? and you'll get all the info.

I got acquainted with fc, but just realized i can not compare the copied files to the originals because i am not able to make copies....the transfer fails right away. After that the card is corrupted (btw i still see 2.7gb on the card so the data is still there. But the files have been replace by one large unreadable file). Anyway it happened again today...lost all my holiday videos (the stills i took transfer fine). I'm going to hook up the old computer tonight to see if it happens.

FYI,
MSI Z68a GD55 motherboard
Win 7
Crucial 128gb ssd

That's tough... The info is probably still in the card, but now you'll probably need data racovery software to get it back. Lots of "free to try, pay to get your data back" programs around, and I think there were a couple of threads around here suggesting some good ones. For a start if the card is SD, write-protect it NOW!

The lost clips re-appeared last night long enough for me to copy a few. That was not a big deal. Thanks for the write-protecting hint but the cards still get courrupted! I isolated the problem to the windows 7 computer. The win XP computer / cards / card reader seems fine. The whole USB transfer process in win 7 explorer seems buggy (strange delays, dialogue boxes won't close ect). I don't want to change the motherboard (!). Maybe ill try a bios update first.

Well i hope to call this one solved Samuel H. Updated the bios, chipset, camera frimware and Windows 7 - with no luck really. Alll USB ports were failing, but the newer USB 3.0 ports failed more often with the 2.0 card reader (3.0 is supposed to be backward compatable with 2.0 devices and my portable HDD has no problems). After buying a USB 3.0 multi-card reader (Transcend ts-rdf8k) and switching readers back and forth many times today, it's clear corruption only happens on the old reader. Pretty confident this was a weird compatability issue like yours. Keeping my fingers crossed though, thanks again.
